How to support your employees during the strikes
The National Education Union has declared that teachers will take strike action on certain dates in February and March.
The strikes will take place on.
Wednesday 1st February
Wednesday 1st March
Wednesday 15th March
Thursday 16th March
Some schools may close completely, and others may remain open but with reduced staff. Either way, there are potential childcare issues which could affect some of your employees.
What can you do to help?
It’s important to understand that this will be a stressful time not just for parents but potentially grandparents and any other employees with childcare responsibilities.
If possible, you should consider whether employees can work from home and change their working patterns to accommodate being able to fulfil their childcare duties. If this flexibility really wouldn’t work for your company, then you may agree that an employee can take their holiday entitlement at short notice.
What can I do if the above doesn’t work for our company?
Employees are entitled to take time off work to look after dependants, this is usually used for emergencies such as sickness but, this could be used in these circumstances, especially if there is no alternative. However, this is usually taken as unpaid leave which may not be the best solution during a cost of living crisis.
Last of all, remember this may be a stressful time for your employees so it’s important to keep an open line of clear communication and ensure all employees are aware of how the absences will be dealt with.
