URGENT WARNING:

We were asked to do 20 VHSc tapes recently. Unfortunately we could only do 7 of them due to mold. This is a real threat to tapes. If you have any camcorder or VHS tapes, get them done soon. They can be cleaned sometimes, but its no guarantee, and the price increases a lot due to the time taken.

Here are some examples of bad ones, and a good one.

VHS VIDEOS

On average, tapes degrade 10-20% over 10 to 25 years. If you’ve been holding on to home videos since the 1990s, there is a good chance some of the footage is already skewed due to aging. We recommend converting your VHS tapes to digital.��If CDs can last over 100 years, why is the lifespan of VHS tapes so much shorter? The answer lies in the magnetic charge. Over time, the magnetic particles lose charge in a phenomenon called remanence decay. This causes discolouration, blacked out scenes, and eventually complete loss of footage. The best way to preserve tapes is to store them in a cool and dry place with little to no climate change. But keep in mind even the best quality tapes stored in optimal conditions will succumb to deterioration. We see a lot of tapes, both VHS and Camcorder, that have not been stored well. Mold is a huge factor for the tapes. We will try, but cannot guarantee we can convert these. Often the tapes stick and become brittle, ultimately breaking when trying to use them.

We have had quite a few camcorder tapes come recently that have mold on them. Don’t delay in getting your old tapes converted.

Mold makes the tape stick together and ultimately snap. Most of the time they cannot be fix so your memories are lost forever.

We have had a great week. 5 VHS videos, 36 Hi8 Camcorder videos, over 10,000 feet of cine film. All converted to digital. We were very lucky with some of the cine films. The had started to degrade and become brittle. Which makes if very hard to convert.
