Preparing for Updates to the EU Battery Regulation

The new EU Battery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542) is already in force and deadlines are coming fast.

Here’s what matters for the fire & security industry:

🔹 Since Aug 2024 – All batteries placed on the EU market must carry a CE mark.

🔹 From Aug 2026 – Labels must include detailed info (origin, category, weight, substances).

🔹 From Feb 2027 – Large industrial, LMT & EV batteries will require a QR code linking to a digital Battery Passport.

For installers, manufacturers, and distributors, compliance is essential. Batteries in fire panels, alarms, CCTV and access control must all meet these requirements.

Accurate testing is essential for Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) batteries. 2 / 3.

Here’s three different types of testing:

🔹Gold Standard: Full discharge testing is precise, but time-consuming and not practical for most field applications.

🔹Best Compromise: Conductance testers deliver accurate conductance and voltage results in under 10 seconds, helping to identify weak batteries and support cost-effective maintenance.

🔹For Trending: Ohmic - reliable enough for the field, without excessive downtime, results must be trended overtime ~6 months. Measurements - track changes over time with baseline data.

Inadequate battery testing can either hide a failing battery or replace a perfectly good one.
