Over the past few months we have been working with Tanja Boehm, a garden designer on the Arabian peninsula.

We worked with Tanja to reimagine her brand, elevate her imagery and give her website a new online home.

1/3 Gardens by Design create exceptional gardens in one of the world’s most demanding climates. Designing gardens that last in Dubai means more than just drought tolerant planting. It means understanding the limits of every material, exactly how much water gardens need and how to create shade that cools in extreme temperatures.

Tanja has designed over 120 gardens in this climate and as a true design expert we sensitively redesigned her identity to showcase her expertise and passion for this region.

We transformed her site, created a new visual brand language and elevated her photography to bring to life her brand for the next phase in the studio journey. There are subtle nods to the place that Tanja calls home through icons and illustration that lean into Arabic letter forms and art whilst while showcasing her contemporary eye and garden style.

Strategy is a word that’s bandied around a lot these days, but what does it actually mean?

Brand strategy is a long-term plan that defines what a company stands for, how it is positioned in the market, and how it connects with its audience.

Taking the time to understand these fundamentals means that we can then shape the visuals to ensure your business makes sense, connects with those you want to reach and feels a particular way.

Too often people say, “I don’t know what I want but I’ll know it when I see it”, but it shouldn’t be this way. That’s why, as part of the strategy process, we share the brand direction and unpack our thoughts in the visuals for how the business should look. It’s only once we are aligned that we start designing, leaving nothing to chance.

As I’ve planned this quarter it’s left me with six days over the next few months that I’ve decided to open up for studio refresh days for Squarespace websites.

I don’t need to have built your site, I don’t need to have done your branding, I don’t need to have worked with you before. You just need to have a Squarespace site.

Refresh days are specifically for busy business owners who are short on time and just aren’t getting to the website stuff on their to do list.

Once they are gone, they are gone. I’ve priced them as a special one off for autumn. You’ll be booking one whole day of my time where I can fully focus on getting things on your site or tidying it up for you.

A full rebrand isn’t always possible, but a brand that’s quietly underperforming will cost you more than you think.

It shows up in the enquiries that go quiet after someone visits your website. In the proposal that doesn’t quite match the work you’re capable of. In the sense that you’re underselling something genuinely good.

Over the years we’ve refined our process to ensure that we only present work that feels right. We don’t present things that we aren’t sure of or feel could be better. We don’t rush things. We only present work that we can stand behind.

If we aren’t clear at any point, we go back and revisit what’s tripping us up. It’s important to us to get things right.

I can pretty much guarantee that whenever I look at a website of a garden or interior designer I’ll see an ‘our process’ page rather than services pages.

Please tell me they are not teaching this on design courses in business modules?

When we dig a little deeper, usually people structure their sites like the big names do. They think because they are successful they should emulate them and that it’s correct.

But, guess what? People who want to work with a big name will type it into google and find them because they have seen them in a magazine or on tv or a book.

You can’t our process an established studio and no one is going to book you when you’re sharing your process is the same as everyone else.

I’m yet to see the process different from studio to studio because everyone follows the same stages.

Based on Cranbrook in Kent, Greenwild is a garden design and build studio run by a husband and wife team.

This is the third branding project I’ve had the privilege of working on for a Cranbrook brand. Previously working on a fashion boutique, a children’s play café and now a garden studio.

I absolutely love this project and can’t wait to finish the website. Hilary sent me through the copy yesterday which I applied to the wireframe. The images are already inserted and now I can assemble it on the platform.
