vincentvehicleservices.co.uk is live on a new one-page site, replacing a WordPress install from 2014.

One page was the right shape here, not a cost-saving. People arriving at a vehicle services site usually want three things: what you do, whether you cover them, and how to reach you. Splitting that across nine pages does not help anybody find it faster.

So it is one page, in order, readable on a phone with cold hands at the side of a road.

The brief we set ourselves was that it must not simply be another site of ours with the colours changed. The first attempt was, and it was rejected, correctly. The second one earned its own structure.

"If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes, then learn how to do it later." Richard Branson.

Good advice, and incomplete on its own. Saying yes to work you are not quite ready for is how most businesses grow. Being unable to deliver it is how some of them stop.

The difference is usually not talent. It is whether the boring machinery behind you can take the extra load.

The enquiry form that goes to an inbox somebody actually reads. The quote that gets sent the same afternoon rather than next week. The booking that takes itself. The invoice that goes out without you remembering to send it.

None of that is glamorous, and none of it is why anybody started a business. It is the reason a yes turns into a delivered job rather than an apology in six weeks.

Say yes. Then look hard at what happens when three more of those arrive at once.

Most businesses are reviewed in more places than they realise.

Google, obviously. Then Trustpilot, Facebook, Yelp, Booking.com, and whichever trade directory somebody signed up to years ago. Each one has its own login, its own notifications, and its own review sitting there unanswered.

CREATE Reviews puts them in one place. Gather, respond and showcase across more than forty platforms from a single dashboard, so a review left on a site you had forgotten about does not sit ignored for six months.

Unlimited reviews, thirty day money back, and cancel without a phone call.

The part worth stressing is responding. An unanswered bad review is a much bigger problem than the review itself, because the next customer reads the silence as agreement.

There is a point every growing business hits where the answer stops being more hours.

You already start early. You already answer the phone in the van. Working harder is not available as a strategy, because you are out of hours to give it.

What is available is asking a simple question about each job you do: does this need me, or does it just currently happen to be me?

Quoting. Booking. Chasing the deposit. Sending the reminder. Asking for the review. Getting the enquiry to the right person. Almost none of that genuinely needs the owner. It only needs somebody, or something, reliable.

Every build we have finished this month took at least one of those off a person. A florist taking payment without a phone call. A hire firm quoting at midnight. A claims firm collecting details at the roadside.

The test is not whether you could do it faster. It is what happens to the business on the week you are ill.

Someone on your team spends three years meeting people. Trade shows, site visits, the useful conversation at the end of a job.

Then they hand their notice in, and every one of those relationships walks out with them, because the record of it was a stack of paper cards in a desk drawer and a phone that belongs to them.

That is the argument for a digital card that the business owns rather than the individual. With Card1, the contacts a team member collects are held by the company. When somebody leaves, their card is reassigned, their details change, and nothing is lost.

There are smaller benefits. The card updates everywhere at once when a number changes, including the copy already saved in someone's Apple or Google Wallet. It works on any phone with nothing to install.

But the one that matters to an owner is simpler. You paid for those introductions.

Plenty of businesses have backups. Rather fewer have ever tried using one.

Those are not the same thing. A backup you have never restored is an assumption with a filename. It might be incomplete, it might be of the wrong thing, it might have been silently failing for months, and you will find out on the worst possible day.

When we replaced a client's site this week, the old one did not get deleted. It was moved aside on the same server and left there, with a verified copy of the files and the database stored separately. Putting the old site back would be one command.

We do not expect to need it. That is rather the point: the cheapest moment to arrange a rollback is before you need one.

If you are not sure where your website's backups are, or whether anyone has ever opened one, that is worth half an hour of somebody's time this week.

Six things that pull work towards a small business, none of which are adverts.

1. Be findable when people ask rather than search. More customers now type a whole question into an assistant and act on the answer. If your site is not legible to that, you are invisible in the part that increasingly decides.

2. Answer the question on the page. "Call for a quote" loses to whoever published a number, a range or a worked example.

3. Show proof, not promises. Anyone can claim to be reliable. Far fewer can show forty people saying so in public, with dates on.

4. Be open when you are shut. Payments, quotes and bookings taken overnight, by nobody, is the part of a website that pays for itself.

5. Say the same thing everywhere. Site, Google listing and directories should agree exactly. Where they disagree, search engines trust all of it a little less. That one is free to fix.

6. Keep showing up. None of it works once.

If one of those six is obviously missing for you, start there.

A new section went live this week for Nationwide Accident Hire, covering prestige and performance vehicles.

The premise is straightforward. If somebody else has put your car off the road and you drive something you genuinely care about, being handed a small hatchback for six weeks is its own insult on top of the accident.

So the page makes one promise and builds everything around it: you get something equal to what you drive, at no cost to you, while yours is repaired.

What that meant in practice was restraint. Fewer words, bigger photography, and the replacement itself as the hero rather than a page of reassuring corporate copy. When the product is the car, the design should get out of the way and show the car.

One of the sites we replaced this week was built by us in 2015.

That is a strange job to take on. You open the files expecting to find someone else's shortcuts and instead find your own, eleven years older and considerably more visible.

Things that were perfectly reasonable in 2015 and are not now: a heavy commercial theme carrying features the client never used, a layout that assumed a laptop, a contact form with no protection worth the name, and an address in the footer that had been wrong for long enough that nobody questioned it.

None of it was negligence. It was the standard of the day, left alone for a decade.

The reason to say so publicly is that it is the same argument we make to clients. A website is not a thing you buy once. It is a thing somebody has to keep an eye on, and if nobody is looking, that includes ours.

One of the sites we replaced this month was running software released in February 2018.

It still looked fine. That is the trap. A website does not visibly rot. It carries on serving pages long after the thing underneath it has stopped receiving security updates, and nobody notices until the day somebody else does.

What actually ages, in rough order of how much it will cost you:

The platform and its plugins, once updates stop.
The PHP version underneath, which eventually gets switched off by the host whether you are ready or not.
The contact form, which quietly stops delivering when an email provider tightens its rules.
The content, which describes a business that has moved on.

None of that shows up on the screen.

If you cannot remember the last time anything was updated on your site, that is the answer. It does not automatically mean a rebuild. It does mean somebody should look.
