On Saturday, I visited an open day near my home at an important two-storey Roman villa with a slate roof, located close to Halberton, Devon. What really caught my eye was a mosaic that had been uncovered—part of the base of an ancient water tank. I also noticed traces of iron slag and clay around the area, suggesting that pottery was produced there on-site. Additionally, coins and various metal artifacts were discovered at the site. I made my way alone along the canal to reach the location. A grant of £249,000 has been allocated to investigate this site over the next five years, although unfortunately, the farmer plans to fill in the site to restore the land for cropping. Surveys have revealed increased activity across the area. The coin shown in the picture is the original one that sparked the initial interest.
