The conversation around AI in biogas is gaining momentum.

This week, our CTO David Payne spoke at the RAFT Energy Biogas CEO Conference, sharing insights on how AI is beginning to reshape plant performance across the sector.

Reflecting on the event, David noted that what stood out most wasn’t just the technology discussions, but the value of bringing together experienced operators, engineers, developers, and innovators in one room.

These conversations are where real progress happens, openly discussing the challenges the industry faces and how we can collectively move the sector forward.

As the industry continues its transition towards more connected and intelligent operations, collaboration and strong digital foundations will be key to unlocking the full potential of AI-driven optimisation.

Thank you to the RAFT Energy team for organising such a valuable event.

We’re pleased to share that our CTO, David Payne, will be speaking at the Biogas CEO Summit 2026 this March, joining senior leaders from across the RNG, biogas, and anaerobic digestion sector.

David will be joining industry peers and delivering a presentation on how AI is reshaping plant performance across the sector. His session will explore how digital infrastructure, structured operational data, and system integration are enabling operators to move beyond monitoring towards optimisation, predictive insight, and intelligent decision-making.

As plants continue progressing towards more connected and data-driven operations, establishing strong foundations remains critical to unlocking meaningful AI-driven efficiency, resilience, and performance gains.

We look forward to contributing to the conversation on how the sector can practically transition from digitalisation to AI-enabled operations.

Last week, members of the Zebra EM team visited anaerobic digestion facilities across the UK, gaining valuable insight into the operational environments that underpin renewable energy generation and sustainable waste management.

Site engagement remains an important part of our approach, enabling a deeper understanding of the processes, infrastructure, and challenges faced by operators. This perspective supports the continued development of digital solutions that enhance data visibility, analytics, and operational performance across complex assets.

Observing the conversion of organic waste into renewable energy and biofertiliser reinforces the critical role that accurate data, monitoring systems, and efficient asset management play in delivering reliable and sustainable outcomes.

Many anaerobic digestion plants are still operating with disconnected systems, from paper-based maintenance records to spreadsheet logging of SCADA data. While the infrastructure itself is often robust, the lack of an accessible and structured data layer can limit operational visibility and performance improvement.

Recently, the Zebra EM team visited UK AD sites to both demonstrate structured CMMS capabilities and deploy our DataBridge devices, working directly with legacy PLC and SCADA environments. Across these projects, we have successfully connected into systems including Allen Bradley and Siemens PLCs, enabling the extraction of structured, real-time data regardless of plant age or panel condition.

The outcome is a shift from manual processes and fragmented reporting towards connected operational environments where maintenance, performance, and compliance data sit within a single, accessible ecosystem.

This means operators can: • Clearly understand asset inventories and service history
• Plan maintenance proactively rather than reactively
• Track compliance with OEM, ATEX, and DSEAR requirements
• Link asset health directly to operational performance
• Gain real-time visibility without full control system replacement

Modernisation does not always require large-scale infrastructure change. Often, it starts by unlocking the value of data that already exists within the plant.

Digital maintenance and connected operational data are no longer optional add-ons, they are foundational infrastructure for scalable, optimised AD operations.

Is your maintenance strategy driving performance or slowing you down?

Many organisations are still relying on spreadsheets, disconnected systems, or reactive processes to manage critical assets.

That often means:
🔹️ Limited visibility
🔹️ Unplanned downtime
🔹️ Inefficient workflows
🔹️ Poor data for decision-making

At Zebra EM, our cloud-based CMMS and asset management platform is designed to bring everything together, giving teams real-time visibility, structured workflows, and actionable reporting.

From preventive maintenance scheduling and work order management, to inspections, stock control and asset tracking, we help organisations move from reactive to proactive.

The result?
✔ Improved reliability
✔ Better compliance
✔ Smarter decision-making
✔ Greater operational efficiency

If you're looking to modernise your maintenance operations in 2026, let’s start the conversation.

Our CTO was on site supporting an anaerobic digestion plant in Bournemouth, helping with onboarding to our CMMS platform alongside deployment of our SCADA data-bridge system.

This phase is all about setting strong foundations, connecting live operational data, structuring asset and maintenance workflows, and ensuring teams can move from reactive fixes to data-driven maintenance and optimisation.

Great to see digital systems being embedded early to support long-term performance, compliance, and operational insight at AD sites.

A busy start to the New Year already

This week included a site visit to Exmouth, supporting the commissioning of a 6 MW gas peaking plant.

It’s great to be back on site, working closely with project teams to ensure systems, controls, and safety processes are aligned as assets move from build into operation. These types of plants play a key role in grid flexibility, and getting the commissioning phase right is critical for long-term performance and reliability.

A strong way to kick off the year, more to come.
