Running a business can be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. It can also be one of the loneliest.
Today is World Mental Health Day.
There is a lot of focus on workplace mental health, and rightly so, but there is another group we do not talk about enough.
Business owners.
When you own the business, everyone often looks to you for the answers.
Your team.
Your customers.
Your suppliers.
Your family.
And when things get difficult, there is not always someone sitting next to you who fully understands the pressure of carrying payroll, cash flow, targets, customer issues and the responsibility for other people’s livelihoods.
That can be a lonely place to be.
I have always believed that business owners are expected to be resilient, but resilience does not mean carrying everything on your own.
𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗢𝗞 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸.
Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is talk to someone who understands.
A fellow business owner.
A trusted adviser.
A friend.
Someone who will listen without judgement and without immediately trying to tell you what you should do.
At Stratique, we talk a lot about growth, performance and helping businesses become stronger. But none of that means very much if the person leading the business is quietly running themselves into the ground.
That is also why, as a team, we are wearing yellow today to show our support for World Mental Health Day and to help keep the conversation visible.
It is a small gesture, but sometimes small gestures are enough to start an important conversation.
So today, if you know a business owner, ask them how they are really doing.
And if you are the business owner, remember that you do not have to have all the answers all of the time.
It is OK to talk, and sometimes a conversation helps more than you think.
