Here at WSS we have been helping a number of our customers with their Cyber Security training. We partner with a 3rd party training provider that, as well as training, also does simulated phishing attacks on the customers employees. Whilst I help to craft the simulated phishing emails, so it is obvious to me that the email is fake, it amazes me every time, just how many employees click the link. And more that than, it amazes me which employees it is that click the link. It just goes to show, in this time where we are all really busy, and don’t have time to think, just how easy it is to click on a link in an email without checking, and the result can be catastrophic for the company.

Here at WSS our servers are hungry beasts that consume energy like there is no shortages. So to help the planet, we have swictch our enegy supplier to one that provides us will 100% green electricity. That means that so far this month, we have saved 157Kg of CO2 entering the atmosphere. Thats the same amount of CO2 that 78 trees would absorb in the same tme period.

After spending too much time, manually patching servers and workstations, we have finally moved in to the automation age. After a lot of work on a MoSCoW spreadsheet we finally decided on NinjaOne as a product to provide Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) and Professional Services Automation (PSA). Having rolled it out to all our managed workstations and servers, it’s made a massive reduction in the workload and also shown up some issues that we didn’t even know were there. The automation options are great, being able to run a script on a users workstation to solve an issue for them whilst on the phone, or better still have a script run automatically in response to an alert condition to fix the issue before the user even notices. We are just starting our journey with NinjaOne, but already there is a huge list of things that we could do with it to make ours and our customers life easier

Time is running out to use the tax incentive, super-deduction, for the purchase of Computer Equipment and Servers.

Purchases up to the end of March 2023 could qualify
for the super-deduction, which offers 130% first-year relief on qualifying main rate Computer Equipment and Servers investments.

Time to check with your accoountants and get those new PC or servers before the end of March.

Here at WSS, we have just completed the upgrading our Manage Anti-Virus and Malware servers to the latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) for both our management server and client installs. Although we try to stay up to date, this upgrade was rolled out as a response to the vulnerability that was discovered in a recent version of OpenSSL which is included in the SEP product. After completing our testing, we are now working through pushing the update to the last few remaining client machines.
WSS take security seriously, and make sure that our clients are using the latest versions and are up to date with the definition files, as well as investigating any alerts. There are some MSPs out there, that trade on their security credentials, that are still using AV products from 2020 (and yes that is meant to be a managed product), so that goes to show that not all Service Providers are equal. WSS origins go back almost 30 years. WaterSkier Software Ltd was founded in 1994 based on a premise that “things could be done better”.

Ian Collins, an IT professional and an experienced water skier in his spare time, was faced with a challenge to get access to the Internet, then a new emerging technology, and felt there should be an easier and more straight-forward way for businesses to create dialup and hosting solutions. Service providers of the time were costly and over-complicated and the solutions were poor and impersonal.

Today, with many local and national businesses relying on them to manage some, or all, of their IT infrastructure, WSS still adhere to their original ethos to do better and provide a more personal service than larger organisations.
