I just wanted to make a wee post to say thank you to Peter May. I’ve seen a few island businesses sharing how he was involved with them, and I thought I’d share my own little story too.
It was the strangest thing. I had literally just sat down to revisit our emails when I saw the news. He had recently sent over his reimagined St Kilda map for his new book, due to be released in January.
He was going to pick it up from my shop, along with an extra copy as a gift for a friend’s birthday. Meeting him was something I had been really looking forward to through a long Hebridean winter.
You can imagine my excitement and shock last year when Mr May first got in touch about a Callanish Stones print. I had read his Lewis Trilogy about ten years ago and absolutely loved them… and I rarely find the time to read books!
I decided to include a copy of my own book with the print. I loved the full-circle idea that he would read mine, just as I had once read his. I can’t say I enjoyed my early twenties very much, so I remember having a huge grin on my face thinking that, if I had known back then, while reading his books, that one day he would have a copy of mine in his hands too. In a strange way, it felt like I had healed a little piece of myself.
It seemed that Peter had a lot of time and affection for the Isle of Lewis, and made a genuine effort to interact with and support local businesses. I was both surprised and absolutely delighted that he took the time to share my work on his social media, and even left me a Trustpilot review.
I’m so sad that I didn’t get to meet him in the shop or hand him his print, but I feel very lucky that our paths still crossed.
So here’s to Peter, for the kindness, encouragement and support he showed a wee artist on Lewis. It meant far more to me than he probably ever realised! His stories brought the landscapes and people of the Hebrides to life for so many people around the world.
