After Friday 4th April, Stockport will never be the same again. The whispers are true, the secret invitations have been dispatched and the smell of excitement is almost unbearable around certain people’s desks.
Yes it’s true, StockPLAY, the world’s most prestigious games tournament is almost here. Taking place at one of Reddish’s most salubrious venues, the select master competitors are all focused on taking home the Thornway Games StockPLAY Shield.
Creative Director of StockPLAY, Carl Wheeler, said of the announcement: “We are thrilled to be entering into this partnership with Thornway Games and think this will bring a new dimension to what we offer currently and will help take our brand to the next level”.
Andrew Thornway, author of cult book Rispin Quill, The Dragon Tongue and CEO of Thornway Games told us: “Everyone here at Thornway Games is very proud to be sponsoring this epic tournament. Having witnessed firsthand the ferocity and dedication of the players from StockPLAY 0.1, we know we’re going to be in for a great night.”
The nine brave warriors taking part in this gladiatorial spectacular will be:

2. The Nailer (StockPLAY 0.1’s winner of the wooden joystick award)
3. Divemaster
4. Mad Hatter
5. P-Man
6. Button-Basher
7. Renegade Rhombus
8. Gun Fingers (StockPLAY 0.1’s Champion of Champions winner)
9. Anomaly
When questioned about The Nailer’s early demise from StockPLAY 0.1 (an injury to an important digit was the cause according to The Nailer’s PR team), Andrew said: “We mustn’t forget The Nailer is a skilled competitor with a great deal of gaming experience. It could well have been a ploy to deceive the competition into a false sense of security for the next round. On the other hand though, old age can be a git, can’t it?”
Will such devious psychological tactics be used for StockPLAY 1.0? With all competitors hoping to be the first to lift and hold such a prestigious trophy, we wouldn’t be surprised.
