🛡️💻 Antivirus… who actually pays for it?

Well, in our house, there are two very different opinions. 😂

👩 Athina: Pays for antivirus and uses two Macs.

👨‍💻 Abz: Pays for absolutely nothing and uses Windows Defender on his Windows PC.

Oh… and he also has two Macs.

Greedy, right?! 😂

He prefers to stick with the built-in protection on his Windows machine.

And as for his Macs…

Let's just say I wouldn't necessarily follow his example. 😂

I personally like knowing I've got that extra layer of protection and use Kaspersky on both of my Macs. I've used it for years — even back when I was working as a software tester and the company I worked for used it before we were eventually forced to change.

One of the things I like is that it's so lightweight that I barely notice it's there.

But when it comes to antivirus, everyone has their own opinions, experiences and preferences.

So rather than starting an Athina vs Abz antivirus war… 😂

We'll let someone else fight that battle!

I promise… it won't be Rio. 😂

He doesn't do public appearances. He prefers to remain behind the scenes, eating cables and generally causing trouble. 🐰🔌

When you drop your computer off, you'll either see:

👩 Athina – the brains behind the social media and resident note-taker.

or

👨‍💻 Abz – the mastermind who actually makes the technology behave itself!

And please don't panic if you get me! 😂

I might not be the one fixing your computer, but I've done this before with Infinite Tech Consulting, so I know what information Abz needs.

I'll take all the relevant notes, make sure everything is properly handed over to Abz and…

I promise I won't attempt to fix it myself. 😂

Because there's a very good reason Abz is the tech guy and I'm the one writing the posts!

Today is dedicated to all those people who somehow know what that mysterious error message means… while the rest of us are just staring at the screen hoping it goes away. 😂

Techies are the people you call when:

💻 Your computer refuses to cooperate
📶 The Wi-Fi has decided to disappear
🖨️ The printer has entered its rebellious phase
🔌 You have absolutely no idea what that cable is for
🤯 Or you've tried turning it off and on again… and it STILL doesn't work!

At Solkar Digital, we love all things tech — although we're not sure Finn & Rio count as techies after their ongoing campaign to eat every cable they can find. 🐰🔌😂

So today, give a little appreciation to the techies who keep your computers, businesses and digital lives running!

Coffee + laptops = potential disaster. 😂

We know coffee is essential for surviving the working day… but your laptop really doesn't appreciate a morning latte poured over its keyboard.

So today’s important IT advice:

☕ Keep your coffee away from your laptop
🥤 Keep your drinks away from your laptop
🫖 Keep your thermos AWAY FROM YOUR LAPTOP!

Basically…

If it can spill, it shouldn't be next to your computer. 😂

Because there are two types of people:

Those who have never spilled coffee on their laptop.
Those who have learned the hard way. 💀💻

Enjoy your coffee today…

Just put it down somewhere sensible first! 😂☕

Got an old laptop, phone, tablet or computer gathering dust in a cupboard?

Before you throw it away, ask yourself:

Can it be repaired? 🔧
Can it be upgraded? 💻
Can someone else use it? ❤️
Can it be recycled properly? ♻️

Even technology that has reached the end of its useful life can contain materials that can be recovered and reused.

And please, don't forget your data! 🔐

Before recycling or passing on a device, make sure you've backed up anything important and properly wiped your personal information.

And if you have a drawer full of mystery cables…

Yes, we're looking at you. 😂

Maybe it's finally time to work out what they're actually for!

🐰💻 Meet the REAL IT department at Solkar Digital...

You’ve met Abz.
You’ve met Athina.

But we haven’t introduced Finn and Rio yet. 🐰🐰

Finn and Rio are our resident rabbits and, quite frankly, they take their job of testing cables VERY seriously.

Their speciality?

🍴 Eating cables
🔌 Chewing anything they can get their teeth into
💻 Investigating technology
🐰 Looking completely innocent when caught

We’re not entirely sure what their qualifications are, but they certainly have years of hands-on experience. 😂

Unfortunately, their approach to IT support is slightly different to ours.

Abz: “Let’s troubleshoot the problem.”

Athina: “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

Finn & Rio: “OM NOM NOM NOM.” 🐰🔌

So if you ever wonder why we’re particularly passionate about cable management and protecting your expensive technology from hungry little monsters...

Meet the other half of Solkar Digital... 👋

Hi! I'm Athina.

You've heard plenty about Abz (don't worry, his ego is big enough already 😂), so I thought it was probably time I introduced myself.

My route into tech definitely wasn't the traditional one.

I went to university... and lasted 3 days. Yep. I dropped out during Freshers' Week because I absolutely hated it. Safe to say uni just wasn't for me.

Instead, I found an IT Computer Repair apprenticeship with QA, and it completely changed my career. I even became a QA Apprenticeship Ambassador, which meant visiting the Houses of Parliament twice to talk about apprenticeships. (Not bad for someone who quit uni after 3 days!)

After that, I worked in IT support for ERP software before moving into software testing in 2015.

A redundancy later (because life likes to keep things interesting), I stayed in software testing and worked my way up to becoming a Test & Release Manager for a financial company.

Then life threw me another curveball.

I had to leave because of ill health, and that's how I ended up working for myself.

These days, I'm the one behind a lot of what you see at Solkar Digital — social media posts, content, ideas, keeping Abz organised (or at least attempting to 😂), and generally making sure things happen.

So if you've ever wondered who's writing these posts...

We’ve all heard of Duolingo for learning languages…

But did you know there are now ways to learn programming in a similar way? 👀

If you’ve ever thought “I’d love to learn how to code, but I have absolutely no idea where to start”, this could be worth a look.

Think bite-sized lessons, learning as you go and hopefully slightly less intimidating than staring at a screen full of code and wondering what on earth you've done. 😂

So, if your computer be acting like it’s been thrown overboard…

💻 “Arrr, why be this thing so slow?”

📶 “Where be me Wi-Fi?”

🔑 “Shiver me timbers, I’ve forgotten me password again!”

🌊 “This website be sending me around in circles!”

…then you might need a friendly tech pirate to come aboard and sort it out. 🏴‍☠️

Whether your technology is walking the plank, your website needs a little TLC, or you’ve simply got absolutely no idea what that strange cable does…
