Ever wondered what technology terms actually mean? I’ve launched a ‘What Is’ series to explain it all simply—check out my latest video!

I hope to publish a short video each week explaining often used terms that we all come across but don't always understand.

This post is a follow on from and earlier post regarding Drive Encryption.

If you hard drive is encrypted this information is vital for you should the worst happen.

This explains how to find your encryption key and save it or how to disable encryption if you so wish.

If you have Windows 11 Pro or Home you will have Bitlocker or Device Encryption installed. This encrypts your hard drive for improved security. This will not stop hackers and phishing emails etc. It will not help if you allow someone access to your machine using remote access. If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the bank, Microsoft, Google, your broadband provider and many more scammers. Device or Bitlocker Encryption will not provide any security against this.

Do you still have Windows 10? If so this post is for you.

Windows 10 was originally supported by Microsoft until Oct 12th 2025.

This support was extended until Oct 2026.

Since then Microsoft have recently extended the support to Oct 12th 2027.

So what does this mean? It means if you enrol on thier extended support scheme you will receive security updates until Oct 2027. You do have to register for the scheme and you require a Microsoft account. I would say 99% of my customers already have a Microsoft account. there is no cost to the enrolment. If you prefer not to have a Microsoft account, you can still create a temporary account, enrol on the scheme and then switch back to a "local account". You will still receive the updates.

This video explains what this is all about and how to go about it.

This Post Discusses the Importance of BitLocker and Device Encryption.

It is crucial to ensure uninterrupted access to your data and hard drive.

Microsoft has been implementing encryption for some time, but for many, its significance remains unclear. In essence, it safeguards your data from unauthorized access. Under normal circumstances, you log in with your password or passcode, and everything functions as expected.

However,

if Windows detects a potential security issue, it may request your BitLocker key. This 48-character key is required to verify your ownership of the drive. Without it, you will be unable to access your machine and data.

My concern is that most individuals are unfamiliar with encryption, the key, or how to locate it.

This video below provides an overview of encryption and guides you on how to determine if it is enabled on your device.
