The EMPSN closure is now less than seven weeks away.

East Midlands schools that have not yet confirmed their replacement services should now be progressing their plans. This includes confirming:

• the replacement broadband service and expected installation date
• how firewall, filtering and monitoring will continue during the move
• who will manage each stage of the migration

Planning now will help reduce the risk of a rushed transition or disruption when EMPSN ceases trading on 31 October 2026.

Projects funded through this year’s Connect the Classroom allocation must be completed and final claims submitted by 26 February 2027, but installation is only one part of the process.

Schools need to allow time for a network survey, technical design, cost documentation, procurement and DfE approval. Equipment, cabling and site access must then be coordinated around the school calendar, followed by testing and handover.

Wave9 has delivered more than 90 successful Connect the Classroom projects since 2021.

We’ve been checking FttP availability for Wave9 schools using SoGEA, and full fibre is now available in some areas.

SoGEA uses copper for the final part of the connection. FttP brings fibre directly into the school, providing faster speeds and more capacity for cloud services, online learning and simultaneous use.

Where it is available, eligible customers may be able to upgrade to a faster full-fibre service.

If your school uses Wave9 SoGEA, look out for an email confirming availability or contact us to request a check.

When a small central IT team supports 20 schools, new infrastructure needs to improve performance without becoming harder to manage.

James Montgomery Academy Trust began by working with Wave9 on seven DfE-funded network and Wi-Fi upgrades. This was followed by trust-wide broadband and the rollout of WaveTalk hosted telephony.

This phased approach has helped create greater consistency across the Trust while keeping its infrastructure manageable for the central team.

Standardising connectivity and safeguarding services across 47 sites is a significant project, especially when those services need to remain available throughout the change.

Wave9 helped Nexus Multi Academy Trust introduce consistent broadband, firewall and web-filtering services across its estate of 20 schools.

Careful planning enabled the work to be completed with zero downtime, avoiding disruption for staff and pupils. Centralised management has also given the Trust greater visibility and control across its sites.
