I recently had a customer bring an older Apple Mac to me because she could no longer access her AOL emails through Google Chrome.
The Mac itself still worked perfectly well, but its age meant that modern versions of Chrome were no longer supported. I installed an alternative browser called Pale Moon, which can be a useful option for accessing modern websites on older, legacy computers. ๐
However, we then hit a much bigger problemโฆ
The customer couldnโt remember her AOL password, hadnโt kept a record of it, and the mobile number registered to the account was an old number she no longer had access to.
โ ๏ธ And this is where an inconvenience can turn into permanently losing access to an account.
If you change your mobile number or email address, remember to update the recovery information on your important online accounts.
And please keep a secure record of your passwords. This could be in a password manager, or for home users who are more comfortable with pen and paper, a dedicated password book kept somewhere private and secure.
Your recovery email address and mobile number are often your lifeline if you forget a password or an account provider needs to verify your identity.
โ
Keep your recovery phone number up to date
โ
Check your recovery email address
โ
Keep a secure record of your passwords
โ
Enable two-factor authentication where possible
โ
Donโt wait until youโre locked out to discover your details are out of date!
A five-minute check today could save you a huge headache later.
