I have just done some work for an elderly gentleman with a brand new PC. He had mistakenly installed a bit of software called Restoro which provides online support. It cost £31 for a year. Not a big deal, we live and learn. Immediately after he installed it, they rang him and bamboozled him into buying a "Super Support" product costing £478. This is a disgusting underhand sales tactic. I have raised a refund but heard nothing, and so will raise a dispute with his bank. Just be careful folks, and look after the vulnerable.
Stay safe. Andy

PC Doctor understands the importance of being connected during the current pandemic. A computer and the internet are essential in keeping yourself informed, ordering essentials, banking, shopping, entertainment and socialising for mental wellbeing.

I am currently still operating, and I am taking every precaution to reduce risk, this will include dissinfecting your equipment, and myself.

If your problem can be fixed remotely, I can log into your PC and fix some issues without visiting.

If your equipment has to have a hands on repair I can collect it from outside of your property and return it repaired and dissinfected, without personal contact.

If I have to repair on site, then I would ask customers who like to observe me working which is normally not a problem, please resist and stay in another room or at a sensible distance. I would also ask that for home visits, if you or a family member are unwell, please wait until your self isolation or treatment has finished before calling.

Thank you for your understanding at this difficult time.

It's soon the end of Microsoft support for Windows 7, on January the 14th. This doesn't mean that you won't be able to use your computer, it just means that Microsoft will no longer fix bugs and security issues with it. So if your machine is quite old, and you don't want to upgrade it to Windows 10 then make sure you have a good security / anti virus program in place. If you do want to upgrade, then it usually takes between 1 and 2 hours to complete and is relatively simple, although not without some risk.

Call PC Doctor on 07961572153 to discuss your options in plain English, no waffle.

Top tip for you all. If you backup your data to external media such as a USB stick or external hard drive, don't then delete the original copy. Always have data you cannot afford to lose on more than one device. This weekend I recovered data from a memory stick that failed to read, that was nowhere else. Luckily the data is now safe, but if it was in multiple devices it would not have been such a panic.

If you need help with data recovery or backups give me a call 07961572153

Job of the week. Removed the hard drives from 7 old computers so they can be stored securely or disposed of as they contain personal customer information. This is done to comply with GDPR regulations.

If you have an old computer and you want to dispose of it, remember that the hard drive will still contain your information. So be careful if you give it away or sell it on.

If you need help or advice on removal or disposal, please give PC Doctor a call on 07961572153. We will give advice over the phone, or visit you at your convenience.

Job of the week.

Have you ever started a job and thought, that is far more complicated than it has any right to be. Step forward the Acer laptop with a liquid damaged keyboard (usually tea!). This involved removing plastic back cover, DVD drive, fan, heat sink, memory, wifi module, motherboard, metal shielding, plastic anti short film, and finally approx 50 machine melted locating pegs. Then fit the keyboard and put all back. Poor design, but it got fixed regardless.

Covering North lincs, I come to you.
Tel : 07961572153 for advice or booking.

Thanks
Andy.

Right folks, a quick lesson. NOBODY who is a genuine tech support person will ring you up out of the blue to tell you your computer has a problem! I regularly pick up the pieces from scams, and they are so easy to avoid. People of all types fall for them, because they are very good at what they do. So, if a random person rings, out of the blue, saying that you've got a problem with your computer, or that they're from the bank or a utility company and need your details, just hang up. Easy. You're not being rude they are, by trying to rip you off. JUST HANG UP!

If you think you've been a victim of a scam on your computer, please get in touch for advice, or to have your machine checked out for peace of mind.

Cheers

Hello, this will be a bit of a wordy post, but bear with me :)
You may have noticed that if you search for computer repair or similar on Google there are now no adverts appearing! Looks a bit strange, like Google from 2007. This is because Google have decided (maybe pushed by Apple etc. in their rush for profits and for you to have no right to repair your own property) that 3rd party technical repair services are no longer a reputable business and are not allowed to advertise on their platform. This means that the only thing that will appear on a search is a premises map reference, and if you're lucky, the actual business you want. As my business is mobile and based in Kirton Lindsey, I will not be seen on searches in Scunthorpe or Brigg for instance, even though I cover those areas, and all of Noth Lincs. This means that I will be relying more on Facebook and Twitter etc, to keep my name out there. So I shall be posting on here quite a bit more in the future, and I would be grateful if you could spread the word as it's becoming harder and harder to make a small tech business viable.

Thanks, Andy

Now the warm weather seems to be here, remember that computers and laptops can overheat. Don't work with laptops on soft surfaces like carpets, duvets and thick tablecloths as this stops air flow. If your computer randomly freezes, shuts down or feels very warm, then it may be due to a clogged fan and heat sink. This can be fixed with a simple clean and service. If this applies to you, just give me a call or text on - 07961572153.

Thanks.
Andy.
