Your phone rang while you were on the job.

You were up a ladder. Hands full. Couldn't get to it.

It went to voicemail.

They didn't leave one.

That call - the one you never heard - was someone who needed exactly what you do. They had the job ready. The budget sorted. They just wanted someone to pick up.

You didn't.

So they tried the next number on the list.

And that plumber - the one you've been undercutting on price for three years, the one whose work you've seen and quietly thought _I do this better_ - he answered.

He's quoting that job right now.

You didn't lose it because your price was wrong. You didn't lose it because your work isn't good enough. You lost it because you were busy doing good work for someone else, and nobody was there to answer.

That's not a you problem.

It's a systems problem.

And it's happening more often than you know.

What a lovely afternoon. 😊

Met Sally Marshall at an FSB networking event today - and then jumped straight on a call because I just wanted to hear more.

Sally runs Steer Your Business - a bi-monthly magazine, podcast, and community for small business owners. She built the whole thing from the ground up. Two books, 500,000+ reach, and content that actually reads like it was written for you rather than sold to you.

She described it as "networking in print."

I thought that was perfect.

If you're a small business owner who wants practical, useful content without the corporate waffle - go and have a look. Link below πŸ‘‡

Sally, it was so lovely to meet you today. Really looking forward to seeing what we can do together! πŸ™Œ

Happy Monday everyone πŸ‘‹

I'll be honest - I did some training this morning and it's still sitting with me a bit.

I'm a rusher. Always have been. Someone tells me their problem and I'm already three steps ahead, mentally mapping how to help. It comes from a good place. But this morning someone pointed out that rushing to the answer isn't the same as actually listening to the question.

That's a bit uncomfortable when you've been in sales as long as I have.

The bit that got me was this - sometimes the desire to help is the very thing that gets in the way of helping properly. When you skip ahead, you miss the part where the real problem surfaces. And the real problem isn't always the obvious one.

Still processing that one if I'm honest.

I think as business owners we get so focused on doing the work that we forget to stop and look at how we're doing it. Today's a good reminder that there's always something to learn - even from habits you thought you'd sorted years ago.

Anyone else been caught out by something like that recently? I'd love to hear it πŸ‘‡

What an incredible find at Driffield Show today! 😍

We spotted Rob Miller from The Really Interesting Tent Company and Tithe Barn Shepherd Huts- and honestly, the stand stopped us in our tracks.

Hand-crafted yurts, made right here in Yorkshire since 2004. Beautiful shepherds huts built with the same love and skill. Diane was in the yurt looking perfectly at home - and honestly, who could blame her!

This isn't mass-produced glamping. Rob and his team hand-select the finest redwood timber, use heavy-duty British canvas, and deliver and install everything themselves. You're not just buying a yurt or a shepherd's hut - you get a personal service from first conversation to the day you open your doors.

The kind of Yorkshire craft and pride that deserves to be shouted about. πŸ™Œ

If you're thinking about glamping, a forest classroom, a unique garden space or anything in between - give Rob a call. Based in Scarborough, delivering and installing across the UK and beyond.

What a day at Driffield Show! 🌟

We spotted one of our brilliant clients, Andrew Jenkins from Orchard Lodge Wolds Restaurant and Accommodation, serving up some very special tastings today - and the reactions from the crowd said it all. We're talking genuine "ooh's" and "that's absolutely delicious" from complete strangers. πŸ˜„

And it's no wonder really.

Wolds Restaurant holds two AA Rosettes - the only restaurant with that award in the whole Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington area. Their chef Michael Burgoyne trained in Michelin-starred kitchens in London and brings that same love of seasonal, locally sourced Yorkshire food to every single plate.

If you've never been, it's tucked away in the beautiful village of Flixton, just a few miles outside Scarborough. The kind of place that reminds you just how much incredible talent there is right here on our doorstep.

Brilliant to see you today Andrew - we hope the show brought you everything you deserved! πŸ‘

Got online this afternoon with a client who's already transformed how they work - but wanted to go even further.

Not fixing problems. Looking to reclaim even more hours. Make things quicker Get rid of every bit of repeated work still hiding in their processes.

That's when you know a system's working.

Tryggr gives their whole team - whether together or working remotely - complete visibility of everything happening with every client, every situation.

One inbox. Everything coming in. They can notify everyone, one person, one client, all their clients. However they need it.

Everyone knows exactly what's going on. No chasing. No duplication. No work falling through gaps.

Today's client used two words to describe it: "transformational and irreplaceable."

Not from us saying it. From them living it daily.

They're not firefighting anymore. They're fine-tuning. Asking "how can we automate this?" instead of "where did that message go?"

The system handles the chaos stuff. They do the actual work.

The best part of my job? Helping businesses get here.

Watching teams go from scattered and stressed to coordinated and confident. From drowning in admin to recovering hours every week.

If your team's still juggling multiple platforms, missing messages, or doing the same work twice because systems don't talk to each other - you don't have to.

You don't need to be a big company for this anymore.

Want to know how Tryggr could work for your business? Message me.

Back from holiday. Monday morning. Cup of tea.

And something happened over the weekend that's got me deeply thinking.

Not about business stuff. About what we tell ourselves is available to us.

I've spent years thinking certain things just aren't options for me. Not in a dramatic way - just that quiet certainty that some things are for other people. Different circumstances. Different lives.

Then this weekend proved me completely wrong.

Something I'd been thinking about - wanting, really, but not quite believing was possible - just happened. Over a weekend. No big plan. No perfect timing. Just became real because I'd let myself actually think about it differently.

Made me realise how much energy I've spent focusing on what I don't want instead of what I do. The problems I'm avoiding instead of the life I'm building.

Your business is the same.

We focus on not losing clients instead of attracting the right ones. On not looking unprofessional instead of what professional actually means for us. On not falling behind instead of where we actually want to go.

That focus - what we don't want - becomes what we get more of.

This weekend reminded me: things change fast when you change what you're thinking about. Not in a manifesting-magic way. In a "you notice different opportunities when you're looking for different things" way.

Your life can shift over a weekend. Your business too.

Not because everything suddenly becomes easy. Because you stop telling yourself what's not available and start noticing what is.

Anyway. Monday sorted.

What are you focusing on this week - what you want, or what you're trying to avoid?

First Week Back: I Think I Need Another Holiday to Recover from This One πŸ–οΈβž‘οΈπŸƒβ™€οΈ

Back Saturday evening and straight into it Monday morning:

Tuesday York All 1 Networking
Wednesday York East Bob
Thursday - BRBN
Scarborough Bob Club this morning

This morning's Bob Club was brilliant - Nick Turnbull did a 10-minute spot on AI then opened it to the room. Indepth discussions about what the opportunities actually are for businesses, not just the usual surface stuff. Reminded me why I love what we do.

Been a busy week with new clients starting, catching up with existing ones, and some brilliant referrals coming through. Exciting momentum happening now.

The good news? Because I could keep an eye on things with Tryggr whilst I was away, there were no fires to put out when I got back. Just catching up with people and slowly watching my tan fade in this Yorkshire weather πŸ˜…

Also - the holiday washing pile is now an ironing pile. So that's my weekend sorted then.

Five days back and already excited about what's happening. The conversations this week have shown me how much has shifted in 12 months. Business owners are asking the right questions now - not "should we use AI?" but "how do we use it properly?"

That matters.

Right. Weekend. Ironing. And possibly booking another holiday to recover πŸ˜‚

Happy Friday everyone!

Julie

Two weeks off. Zero guilt. Zero worry.

Not because I've changed. Because my systems have.

Used to feel guilty even thinking about a week off. Guilty booking it. Guilty the entire time away.

But the guilt? That was just the surface.

Underneath was the worry. The constant low-level anxiety that something was being missed. That a client needed me. That an opportunity was slipping through.

Haven't taken two weeks off in fifteen years. Not because I didn't have time. Because I couldn't handle the guilt - or the worry - that came with it.

This year: Took two weeks. Felt nothing but relaxed.

Here's what changed: Professional systems that work whether I'm present or not.

Three years ago, the worry was inevitable. Taking time off meant things would fall apart. I knew it. My brain knew it. So it never switched off.

Even with the laptop, even checking constantly - the worry was always there.

TryggR changed the equation.

Unified communications. Everything in one place. Professional response systems running whether I'm at my desk or on a beach in Greece.

Morning check: few minutes. Evening check: few minutes. Business running fine. Nothing falling apart.

But here's the bit that actually proved it worked:

Day four. Sitting at dinner. Realized I hadn't thought about the business for eight hours. Not because I was forcing myself not to. Because there was nothing to worry about.

Used to wake up on holiday reaching for my phone before I was properly awake. This time: woke up, had breakfast, went for a walk. Checked TryggR after lunch. Nothing urgent. Nothing missed.

First time in fifteen years I've slept properly on holiday.

That's what professional systems buy you. Not just guilt-free time off. Worry-free time off.

Here's what most business owners don't realize: guilt isn't a character flaw. It's a systems problem. And so is the worry.

When your business operations require you present to function, worry is the rational response to being away. Your brain knows things might fall apart. Of course you can't relax.

But when you have professional systems? The worry evaporates.

Not because you care less. Because nothing falls apart when you're not there. And your brain knows it.

Two weeks off. Zero guilt. Zero worry.

Not because I've become better at boundaries. Because my business systems don't need me in them anymore. Just aware of them.

That's the difference between a holiday where you're constantly anxious and one where you're actually free.

If you can't relax on holiday, that's not a you problem.

That's a systems problem.

First day back from holiday.

Stack of emails. One very clear reminder about how business actually works now.

We chose every restaurant standing outside, phones out, scrolling reviews. Chose the boat trip before we left the hotel. Picked the village to visit based on what strangers said about the car park.

Not once did we book something because someone we knew recommended it.

We Googled. Read reviews. Chose accordingly.

And here's what stuck with me - standing outside that restaurant in the sunshine, watching my husband scroll through one-star reviews about slow service: someone else got our €90 that night. A place across the square with better reviews and roughly the same menu.

Same product. Different reputation. Different outcome.

That's the bit people forget about reviews. It's not about vanity. It's not about collecting stars like trophies. It's about the moment someone stands outside your business - or sits at their desk Googling what you do - and decides whether to choose you or the competition.

And they will Google you. Even if their best mate recommended you. Especially if their best mate recommended you.

Because recommendation gets you on the shortlist. Reviews decide who gets the business.

Two weeks away. Dozens of decisions. Every single one filtered through Google reviews first. Restaurants, boat trips, tourist spots, where to stay. All of it.

We never chose the cheapest option. We chose the one that looked like it wouldn't let us down.

That's what good reviews buy you - trust before the conversation even starts.

And poor reviews? They send your customers to someone else before you know they existed.

I came back thinking about how many businesses are losing work they'll never know about. Not because they're not good enough. Because their Google reputation doesn't reflect it.

Or because they've never asked. Or because they asked once three years ago and assume that's job done.

Your reputation isn't static. It's either being built or it's being eroded. And if you're not managing it, you're just hoping people choose you when better-reviewed options are right there on their screen.

The question isn't whether reviews matter.

The question is: how much business are you losing because yours don't reflect how good you actually are?

Right. Now for the mountain of washing.
