Welcome to the exciting world of technology. If you're feeling overwhelmed by all these tech-savvy terms and gadgets, don't worry; we've got your back. In this beginner's guide, we'll break down the basics of using a computer and introduce you to the wonders of the digital world.

Turning it on and off: Let's start with the basics - the power button. To turn your computer on, press the power button. When you're done, click "Start" (ironically) and choose "Shut Down" to turn it off properly.

Navigating the desktop: The desktop is like your computer's home base. Here you'll find icons for files, folders, and programs. Clicking on an icon will open that item.

The Internet: Ah, the gateway to the digital universe. Click on your internet browser icon (usually an icon of a globe) to get online. From there, type in the web address (URL) you want to visit and press "Enter" to go there.

Searching: Can't find what you're looking for? No problem! Go to your favourite search engine (Google is a popular one) and type in your question or topic. The search engine will help you find what you need.

Primary functions: On the internet, you'll see links, buttons, and tabs. Don't be afraid to click around and explore. If you ever get lost, you can use the back button (left arrow) or the home button (usually a little house) to return to where you started.

Sending and receiving emails: Email is like sending a digital letter. Click on your email program (like Gmail or Outlook) and follow the prompts to create and send your email. You can also receive emails from friends and family!

Staying safe: Always remember to be cautious online. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information with strangers. Keep your computer's software updated and use a reliable antivirus program.

Now, we want to hear from you! Are you feeling more confident about using your computer? Do you have any questions or topics you'd like us to cover in future blog posts? Don't hesitate to leave a comment below. And if you need any technology support, feel free to contact us. We're here to help you on your tech journey! Happy computing!

As we become more reliant on the internet for everyday activities like shopping, banking, and communication, it's important to be aware of online activity's potential risks and dangers. Scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people into giving away personal information or money, and seniors can be particularly vulnerable to these scams. Here are some tips on how to stay vigilant against online scams and protect yourself.

Beware of suspicious emails or messages. Scammers often use email, social media, or messaging apps to reach out to potential victims. Be wary of any messages that seem too good to be true or ask for personal information like your bank account number or social security number. Don't click on links or download attachments from unknown sources, and be suspicious of any messages that use urgent or threatening language.

Keep your personal information private. Be cautious about sharing personal information online, such as your full name, address, phone number, or date of birth. Only share this information on secure websites or with trusted sources. Check the privacy settings on your social media accounts and limit the information visible to the public.

Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication. Use different passwords for different accounts and make sure they are strong and difficult to guess. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your passwords. Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification form, such as a text message or fingerprint, before accessing your account.

Stay up-to-date with security updates and software patches. Ensure your computer and mobile devices are running the latest software and security updates. These updates often include fixes for known vulnerabilities that could be exploited by scammers or hackers.

Trust your instincts. If something seems suspicious or too good to be true - It probably is. Don't be afraid to ask for help or advice from us.

By following these simple steps, you can protect yourself from online scams and enjoy the benefits of the internet safely and securely. Remember, scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people, so stay vigilant and be cautious when sharing personal information or responding to messages from unknown sources.

As always, call us on 01227 637262 or email us at [email protected]

Google is the go-to search engine for millions of people worldwide. Whether you're looking for a recipe, researching a health condition, or just trying to settle a bet, Google has the answer. But are you getting the most out of this powerful tool?

Here are ten tips to help you master Google search and find what you're looking for quickly and easily:

🟢 Use specific keywords: Instead of typing in a broad search term like "dogs," try something more specific like "golden retriever puppies for sale."

🟢 Use quotation marks: If you're looking for an exact phrase, put it in quotes. For example, "best pizza in town" will give you results with that exact phrase.

🟢 Use a minus sign: If you want to exclude certain words from your search results, put a minus sign before the word. For example, if you're searching for "healthy recipes" but don't want any results with the word "dessert," type "healthy recipes -dessert."

🟢 Use the site: operator: If you want to search for something on a specific website, use the site: operator. For example, "site:nytimes.com coronavirus."

🟢 Use the filetype: operator: If you're looking for a specific type of file, such as a PDF or a Word document, use the filetype: operator. For example, "filetype:pdf gardening tips."

🟢 Use Google Images: If you're looking for a picture, try searching on Google Images. You can even drag and drop an image into the search bar to find similar images.

🟢 Use Google Maps: If you're looking for directions or want to explore a new area, use Google Maps. You can even use Street View to take a virtual tour.

🟢 Use Google Translate: If you need to translate a word or phrase into another language, use Google Translate.

🟢 Use Google Scholar: If you're doing research for a school project or just want to learn more about a topic, use Google Scholar. This will give you access to academic articles and papers.

🟢 Use Google Alerts: If you want to stay up-to-date on a particular topic, set up a Google Alert. You'll receive an email whenever new content related to your search term is published.

So, there you have it – ten tips for mastering Google search. Do you have any other tips or tricks for using Google effectively? Share them in the comments below!

Several scam attempts recently via text purporting to be from Santander.

The message states that a named person has taken an amount (usually around £250) from your bank account. If this is not something you have authorised, they supply a link to report it, which will lead the recipient to reveal personal information to the scammer.

Please be aware of this, particularly for those with a Santander account.
