When business leaders say “our marketing isn’t landing”, or “we need a rebrand”, or “we need to update our website”, there's an obvious issue, but it might not be what you think it is.

It’s most likely to be a brand positioning challenge.

If you speak to your team right now, can everyone clearly answer:

🤔 Who is the brand for?
🤔 What do you want to be known for?
🤔 What makes you different?
🤔 What are you not?

Without that clarity, marketing won’t land, content will be inconsistent, sales take longer, and you’ll end up in meetings about meetings.

Brand foundations aren’t a nice-looking moodboard.

They’re about positioning, audience clarity, and messaging framework. A decision filter for everything else.

Until those exist, every tactic is working harder than it needs to.

What feels hardest in your business right now? Positioning, or getting your messaging out there?

Have you seen a good brand identity come out of AI? Highly unlikely.

To be clear, we use AI for certain parts of the brand development process.

To pressure-test a brief, to speed up the parts of the process that don’t need a human hand on them.

But design is different.

The things that make a brand actually work and make it stand out for the right reasons come from somewhere that AI cannot imitate.

Human creativity, collaboration between the designer and the team behind the brand, and conversations that really get into the story behind the brand.

These are just a couple of mock-ups you can see here that were visualised using AI. A helpful way to show how the brand could look “off the page”, beyond the brand guidelines, and out in different placements in the real world.

The brand behind them didn’t use AI, though, and we’ll stay that way.

I've just finished working on a brand called Triplo Travels (I am a bit obsessed). Its a travel company born from a pretty straightforward observation: too many older people stop travelling earlier than they want to, not because they've lost interest, but because the industry hasn't kept up with them.

The founder and team saw that gap clearly. Working through the brief, I started noticing something that frustrated me. The entire travel category leads with what people can't do they lead with the condition, not the person. When you're selling to someone with care needs, the industry reflexively sells them a solution to their problem. That misses the entire point. People with care needs aren't problems to solve. They're people who've spent a lifetime collecting stories and experiences, still dreaming about the next place they want to see. That appetite for living doesn't just disappear.

Triplo starts somewhere completely different. They believe you should keep exploring the world with confidence, dignity and genuine enjoyment. The whole brand is built around that belief around possibility, not limitation. Its about removing barriers. Its about saying: you get to keep travelling, you get to keep making memories, on your own terms with people who actually understand what that means. Creating the identity for them has been an absolute joy because it forced me to think differently about what matters. The market around this space is beige and corporate and focused on the wrong things. So how do you make something light and fresh and modern? How do you prove that exceptional support and real independence aren't opposites? You tell the truth. You celebrate the person, not the condition. You lead with experience, not need. That's why I love working on brands that mean something, brands willing to push hard to stand out for the right reasons.

Huge thanks to Abbots Care for taking Midnight Blue Ltd with you on your amazing journey! You are a brand that inspires me every day.

There's a specific challenge that comes up for wellness brands, and that's making a trustworthy, relatable connection with the right people from the first interaction.

It's more challenging when the brand has to be warm enough that someone anxious about asking for help would actually take the first step, but credible enough that a therapist (or a business investing in workplace support) would trust it completely too.

Those were the challenges that Boost my mood - Therapy a therapist matching platform connecting people with qualified UK mental health professionals, had when we started working together.

From our first strategy meeting to build the foundations, to mood boards to build the right visual identity, we worked closely with their team to focus on the accessible, tailored, and friction-free support that Boost My Mood offers when people need it most.

We're really proud to share that the brand is now live, including an intuitive new website that we built to create a seamless user experience from the initial quiz to booking a matching therapist.

Let us know what you think! We'll share the website in the comments.

As a brand consultancy, we spend a lot of time with marketers, working with each other to strengthen the business. But last week, we spent the day with a room full of marketers for a different reason, and it was such a great day. Positively lovely, you might say...

It was The Marketing Meetup organiser day with the TMM team and organisers from across the UK (and Lori, who came all the way from Toronto, which alone says something about this community).

🧠 El opened the day and grounded us back in what TMM is actually about.
🤝 Joe Glover talked about Connection. Not as a buzzword, but what it really means and why it sits at the heart of every single event.
🗨️ James Sandbrook talked about the craft of speaking and the details most people overlook. What your body language is saying before you've opened your mouth. The value of pausing before you answer.

We aligned on values, asked a lot of questions, and came away full of ideas and renewed excitement about our TMM community in St Albans, which we co-host with Fiona from Attention Seeker

🍕 Also, we had pizza, of course!

All of that energy is going straight into our next event in November, when we're doing something different.

There will be no speaker or panel, and instead we're hosting a live marketing roundtable.

You bring a challenge, the room works through it together, and you will leave with at least three ways to tackle it and a room full of people who'll ask how it went.

If you're a marketer in Hertfordshire, whether in-house, freelance, agency, or founder doing your own marketing, we'd love to see you there.

Last week, Midnight Blue Ltd won silver for Most Enterprising Business at the Hertfordshire SME Business Awards, and I was named Silver Business Woman of the Year Hertfordshire. It's the first business award I've been involved in without Michelle. We've been fortunate to get recognition before. Being there as a solo founder felt strange, honestly (thanks to William Peck for being my date!). It definitely made me realise how much work I've actually done on myself and the business over the past year.

What does "enterprising" even mean? For me, it's staying curious. It's being willing to take a risk on something that might not work. It's genuinely trying to solve real problems for the people you work with, instead of just doing what looks good in a pitch deck. It's having the guts to do things differently when different is what's needed.

Watford & West Herts Chamber of Commerce (W3RT) - this community is different. They're not just talking about inclusion and diversity – they are educating all of us to have a better understanding of it and deliver more.  They're genuinely interested in lifting each other up. No performative stuff. Real people, real conversations, real support. When you're around that kind of authenticity, it changes how you show up. It changes how you build. That's what gets lost in a lot of business talk. We focus on strategy and positioning and growth metrics - those things matter. But underneath all of that? It's the people. It's being yourself. It's knowing that how you build your business matters just as much as what you build.

Wonderful to see Saffron Johnson, Lee Keogh fCMgr, Amanda Grimston - you guys are total legends!

Congratulations to all the business in the room. Special shout out to The Marketing Meetup. Jeremy Freeman, Nick Silverstone, Sarah Pascaru

Huge congratulations to Lydia Berman for the overall win.

One of the biggest challenges when creating a brand is when there are two completely different audiences with opposing needs. That was the case for The Vegas Walk Method, a behavioural framework designed to help people manage gambling risks.

The Vegas Walk Method treats the casino as an engineered environment and uses structured rituals, such as walking away after specific bet counts, to maintain control rather than relying on total exclusion.

We established in the initial brand workshops that players want to feel smarter, more in control, like they're joining something exclusive. Whereas Casinos want responsible play that keeps players coming back.

The same product, but two very different doors in.

Most brands in this space go one of two ways: preachy and apologetic, or flashy and irresponsible. But neither builds trust with either audience.

We positioned Vegas Walk Method as the player's operating system. A framework built on structure and discipline, not promises. The identity had to feel premium and scientific enough for players to believe in the methodology, while being something casinos would actually want to display and promote.

Then we built the full ecosystem: the book, playing cards, casino chips, and app, with every piece speaking the same visual language and serving a different moment in the player's journey.

The book is now in major retailers and live in four casinos.

We're proud of how it looks, and to report the client is too! What do you think?

Happy Friday 🩵 What a week!

Super exciting to kick off a brand new project.

We get our new clients to fill in a brand questionnaire at the start, and it always throws up things the client hasn’t said out loud before.

That first strategy session exploring what the brand could and should be is one of my favourite parts of the whole process every time.

📸 How lovely is the setting for this session at The Harpenden Collective ?

More excitement next week as Midnight Blue is at the SME Hertfordshire Business Awards as a finalist in three categories:

🏆 Best Enterprising New Business
🏆 Business Woman of the Year
🏆 Service Excellence

SME Awards UK

Incredibly proud to have been recognised across all three.

Best of luck to all other finalists!

Will you be there? Would love to see you there!

September always feels more like a new year than January does.

January gets all the hype, but September is when people actually do something about it.

For a lot of the founders and MDs I work with, the brand is on that list. The website that needs a refresh, the messaging that still describes the business they were rather than the one they've built.

If that sounds like something that has sat on your To Do list waiting for the right time, it's now. Let's talk.

September is busier than we thought, in the best way.

On Thursday 17 September, I'm at The Harpenden Collective running a workshop on personal branding on LinkedIn. Not how to go viral, not a content formula. Just how to show up online as yourself, in a way that's honest and clear and actually brings the right people to you. Members come free, non-members ÂŁ25+VAT. Find out more: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-power-of-personal-branding-on-linkedin-tickets-1996623982078

And on 23 September I'm at Stanta in St Albans for a free brand-building workshop. That one's about the business brand, whether it reflects where you actually are now, who you're for, and what you stand for going into Q4.
