Microsoft's new AI powered assistant - Copilot - is now unrestricted and available for all.

Copilot integrates helpful AI tools directly into 365 apps and Windows. It's a bit like a personal assistant, helping you schedule meetings in Outlook, suggesting formula in Excel, generating images in Paint, and much much more.

If you want to get your hands on Copilot, come and talk to us because Microsoft have just given us the ability to sell it to you.

🔬 What has Microsoft Excel go to do with the human genome?

Last week, Microsoft released an update to Excel, that solves a problem that's been around since the program was released in 1985.

A problem so annoying it forced scientists working at the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee, to release a new set of naming guidelines to help work around it. Turns out, it was easier to rename the human genome than it was to work around this particular Excel issue!

What is this problem, and what does the update solve then?

If you've ever imported data into Excel, you might have come across the feature responsible. Enter MARCH1 into a cell in Excel, it interprets it as a date and you end up with Mar-01 displayed on screen.

For most people that's fine. We probably wanted a date anyway. Scientists working on genetic data though, might be noting down the abbreviation for the Membrane Associated Ring-CH-Type Finger 1 (which is now renamed to MARCHF1)!

Until now, the only way to prevent this behaviour was to set options for each column (or each data import) prior to entering data. That works okay, but when you start importing and exporting data and passing it between lots of people mistakes happen, and at some point Excel will munge the data (Google it, it's a technical term!).

Thankfully, this latest update gives users and importantly, organisations the ability to control auto formatting at a global level. Much to the delight of scientists, digital marketers, and anyone who works with large lists of data in Excel!

It's such a shame to see 730 jobs lost, with a ransomware attack being the final nail in the coffin for this historic British business. Our thoughts go out to everyone at KNP logistics.

The consequences of cyber crime can be devastating, and we're glad to be one of the companies helping businesses in the UK protect themselves against attacks like the one KNP fell victim to.

These attacks need to be stopped.
