STOLEN DATA – IS AVAST SELLING YOUR INFORMATION ??

A new story that has started to appear online in the last week is a real kick in the teeth of all the people using so called free anti virus. An investigation by Vice and PC Mag have got their hands on leaked documents naming AVAST as one of the biggest culprits of turning a user into the product, so you may not pay for the software/service but they are selling you instead.

It appears that they are collecting personal data from your internet browsing, including sites, what you are looking at, what you buy, etc and then selling this information to some of the largest businesses in the world – Google, Yelp, Microsoft, McKinsey, Pepsi, Home Dept, Intuit and many others. Some of the data that is being sold is what is know as All Clicks Feed, this is basically means they are feeding everything including clicks, your movements around websites in full detail – this is highly valuable data to other business when trying to sell products and services to you. So when you start looking at the figures, Avast claims to have somewhere in the region of 435 million active users every month and they are linked to a company called Jumpshot who have stated they have information on around 100 million devices, we are talk about big money !!

Now another thing to be worried about is that Avast and Avg are now one in the same company, both of these business provide these so called free anti virus solutions. Does this then imply that they are both carrying out this type of business practice, selling information without users knowledge ??

Then the bigger question is who else is do this shady type of business, so the term free is not real it just means they are making money but YOU are the PRODUCT.

Free virus protection – no such thing !!

Talk to us for a real, true full virus solution

PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO LIKE AND SHARE THESE POSTS TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE GETS TO HEAR NEWS LIKE THIS - THIS MAKES IT MORE WORTH WHILE FOR US TO DO THIS......

Apple Does it again – Apple Locking Batteries to Stop Repairs

It has now come to light from various sources Apple has activated a long dormant software lock in their iOS to stop anyone but Apple replacing your iPhones Battery. This appears to be a dramatic policy change being put in place to control the market, there by making them even more money.
During testing of this issue, it was found that even replacing the original battery supplied in the iPhone with another genuine one, that the same result is found. This means that the only way a simple battery replacement can be done will be by taking to Apple directly.

Currently this issue is only affecting the latest range of iPhones – iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max, the worry is that this may be intended to be switched on across the whole range if any of the iOS updates contains the on switch for this feature.

So, to put this simply Apple must be locking the battery in the factory when the iPhones are put together – therefore in the future if you replace your battery to will see this “service” message.

It has been found that the iPhone batteries contain a microcontroller made by Texas Instruments, this provides the iPhone itself with such information as time to discharge, capacity and temperature. In the majority of phones on the market this TI chip exists but in the new iPhones Apple have added an extra feature which is an authentication function which is then used to pair the phone and the battery.

We don’t know where Apple will stand in relation to this legally moving forward as this is akin to stopping a car owner taking their car in for service to a local garage and forcing them to go to a main dealership – this practice was stamped out years ago as it was classed as non-competitive.

This said this will issue will not affect the general performance of the iPhone itself, but it will make life impossible for users to tell what’s happening with their battery, thereby making it impossible to rely on the phone not to run out of battery.

The apple die hard’s will say but you can get an apple that will allow you to check on your battery health that’s not provided by Apple !! Good point, except Apple has now blocked these apps in iOS 10 or above – we see this as a conscious move by Apple to close the door on battery replacement.

There are two work arounds currently, one is to plug your iPhone into a Mac and running a third-party app to check the battery (Not really practical). The other option is that it is possible for an experienced repairer to remove the controller from the old battery and replace it on the new battery – but this is not for the average person to do and on something as simple as replacing a consumable part.

If you own it then you should have the choice of how and where you have it repaired – a step to far by Apple !!

Samsung The Future Unfolded
On the eve of one of the most anticipated phone releases across the world all eyes are turned to Samsung to show what the future holds for the new range. Samsung have yet again created such a buzz with little snippets about these phones and with lots of talk about the possibility of the first foldable commercially released handset to market their marketing machine has done a great job. Don’t be fooled these handsets maybe released this month but for the average phone buyer they could be well out of reach with whispers that if they are released they’re price tag could be double the price of the normal handsets – in and around $2000……Wow !!

But the other new handsets from Samsung are not going to let them down, faster processors, better camera’s, Ai and even finger print scanners built into the glass on the front of the phone – a true change ??!!

The predictions for the new phones are as follows;
A better selfie camera 10 megapixels for sharper images of those all-important pictures. On the 10+ we predict a four-camera system with 4K shooting capabilities with an even better slow-motion shooting capability and with Ai best shot technology the imagery produced will be one of the best in market possibly over taking the Google Pixel phone which has been making real in roads into the phone market of late. Samsung have even stepped up the look of the phone by reducing the bezel once again by building the selfie camera behind the front glass itself. As for the finger print scanner gone will be the days of the rear scanner and in will come the built-in scanner on the front of the phone. One final prediction is the wireless ear buds, we think that the new phone will come with earphones that can be charged by the phone itself, but Samsung will still support the standard ones with the earphone jack which has proved so popular with so many users who like to use their own high quality ones.

Only time will tell if Samsung can really capture the market once more with this new offering.

Huawei Overtakes Apple

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has now become the second largest supplier in the world as of the beginning of August. It is claimed that Huawei has shipped 54.2 Million units in quarter 2 of this year, this equates to 15.8% market share.

Does this mean the death of Apple iPhone….. no indeed it doesn’t, its just a shift in the market. Slightly less Samsung phones have been sold as there has been a shift to alternative Android devices as the market matures to other manufacturers over the bigger players.

We have been predicting the uptake of the Huawei devices for the last 18 months as they have made huge improvements to the design, features and build quality. It also shows that people are happy to step out side their comfort zone when it comes to what they know and buy in relation to this most important tool in their lives… the smartphone.

But be warned…. big players, don’t get complacent when it comes to the design and new features you put in your phones as it could well be a smaller, newer player that could come up with the next big thing that takes the market by storm and changes the face and shape of the smartphone market.

Huawei was established in 1987, now boasts 180,000 employee’s, 36 joint innovation centre’s and 14 R & D offices and over $92,500 revenue in 2017

Windows 10 Update – Black Screen of Death / Where's Everything Gone ??

In the latest major update from Microsoft users have been promised even more functionality and improvements but many users from around the world have reported major problems either running the update or in some cases a Black Screen of Death as its being called.

The black screen of death appears after the final phase of the installation and all the hard work has been completed, when the desktop comes up for the final time, everything is missing on the desktop except the recycle bin. Users were also reporting that they were unable to access the start menu or any of their data on these machines. In some cases it was possible just to roll back the machine to the previous build of Windows 10 but others were left with nothing.

One of the issues that may have caused this type of behaviour was put down to the Anti Virus software provided my Avast. Avast have commented on this and have stated there is nothing wrong from their end and do not know why the update may have encountered this type of issue.

But the problems that were contributed to the Avast software causing this type of crash can not explain the same issue happening to those who have never installed, run or had this software. Microsoft have also advised users of Intel 600p and Pro 6000p SSD’s to roll back to the previous build of Windows 10 as there were reports of crashes when using the new update.

Our advice to any user proposing to carry out such a major update is to run back’s and make sure you have everything before proceeding just in case this type of thing happens. We also advise customer’s that if something does go wrong then don’t try and fix the problem yourself as you may make the issue worse. If in doubt then please get in touch and we will be happy to help and carry out this type of update for you, reducing the possible risk of data loss.

Please understand we are big advocates of these updates and security patches and they are a necessary evil in this day of Cyber Security issues but always note things can go wrong and its always nice to know you have us to call in those cases.

WINDOWS UPDATE MESSAGE - REAL or NOT ?

We’ve had a couple of customers contact us in regards to a message that has popped up on their startup screens and we wanted to clarify this for you all out there in Facebook land. This is the message;

Important updates needed

After April 10, 2018, Microsoft will no longer support your version of Windows 10, and this PC won't receive official security updates.

These security updates help protect your personal data from harmful viruses, malware, spyware, and other malicious software. Microsoft recommends updating to the latest version of Windows 10 immediately.

Select Download updates to begin downloading and installing the new version of Windows 10. The update may be up to 6 GB, and may take a few hours to download depending on your internet speed and PC performance. Internet access fees may apply.

So this is a real message from Microsoft and not a scam for a start, so don’t panic. After all the problems with the CPU threat security issue and several other major problems with other Microsoft updates, they have decided to push all Windows 10 users into moving to the latest version. So yes you can go ahead with this path to bring you up to date and protect your system. You also have the option of manually updating to Windows 10 version 1709 which is what this update is, some are saying this is the best method as it is less troublesome in the long run as it is less likely to run into issues during the process. If you need any help with is manual update process then please get in touch and we will be happy to help. If you are ever unsure of a message on your system then it is best to double check that it is real as we have seen many new customers who have been duped into clicking on things that aren’t real and ending up in a whole world of pain…… if in doubt please get in touch.

ANOTHER SCAM CALL - Captured This Time

Well it seems that the scammers were not happy with their attempts yesterday or there is a whole batch of these call centres in India currently trying to catch unsuspecting people out. The tactic was similar from yesterday, in the fact it was an automated message supposedly from our ISP saying they were going to disconnect the internet service, press 1 to stop this or 2 to allow this to happen. Obviously I pressed 1 to see what they were trying and this time I decided to record part of the conversation so others can here what the script sounds like. I have edited this to remove some private information and some expletives used by one of the call handlers when they realised they had been caught out. The number this time for note that was used was 01603652833 – obviously this is not a real number and when checked is not even in service – Just as a side note we haven’t used Talk Talk in a number of years and shows how out of date their information actually is. The script being used this time was very similar to the one that was used yesterday, including the remote access software they wanted us to use, right down to the how concered they were in regards to the number of entries in the system log. The only difference to this particular script was that they said they were going to send another router.

So once again everyone please be careful and don’t fall for this type of scam, end the call…. If you are in doubt as we have said before call your ISP directly or give us a call and we will be happy to help.

Please share this post with as many people as you can to help stop this happening to less switched on people.

Yahoo Mail not working With Apple Devices

It has come to light in the last 48 Hours that soon after Apple released iOS 11 that some of these users starting having problems with accessing their Yahoo email. But these problems seem to have escalated in the last few days with these users not being able to access their Yahoo email at all.

Yahoo has acknowledged these issues in the last few days by issuing an official statement promising to issue a fix shortly. In the mean time they have offered a workaround for the problem until a fix is put in place.

COMPANY STATEMENT;
“We are aware that some Yahoo Mail users are currently seeing issues when accessing their emails through a Mail app. We apologize to those affected and are working quickly to fix it. You can try using the web or Yahoo Mail app to access your email in the meantime.”

The official workaround is to download the Yahoo Mail App to be able to continuing to access your emails. If you do not feel like doing this then I’m afraid you will have to sit back and wait for the fix at some point. The problem with this is that we believe this is an ongoing problem which appeared back in December of last year when Yahoo admitted similar issues effecting emails.

The question we have to ask is will users put up with these ongoing problems with such a necessary form of communication in today’s fast paced world, or is Yahoo going to start see clients jumping ship to other email suppliers – only time will tell.

If in the mean time you need help with your iPhone or iPad then get in touch and we will be happy to help.
