Cybersecurity in the UK is under pressure, and the NCSCโ€™s 2025 Annual Report is a wake-up call for businesses of all sizes. Hereโ€™s what you need to know, and why it matters.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has just released its 2025 Annual Report. Itโ€™s not exactly comforting bedtime reading; attacks are up, threats are evolving and the message is clear: itโ€™s time to take cybersecurity seriously.
The UK saw a 50% rise in nationally significant cyber incidents compared to last year. Thatโ€™s 204 major attacks, the highest number ever recorded. These arenโ€™t just tech hiccups; theyโ€™re serious breaches affecting critical infrastructure, retail giants and even rail operators.

Whoโ€™s behind it? State-backed actors from China, Russia, Iran and North Korea are all named. Ransomware is still rampant, with criminals targeting whoeverโ€™s most likely to pay up or suffer from downtime. And AI? Itโ€™s a double-edged sword. While itโ€™s helping businesses, itโ€™s also giving cybercriminals new tools to wreak havoc.

But there is some good news: you donโ€™t need to be a tech expert or have a huge budget to protect your business. The NCSC is urging companies to get back to basics. That means phishing awareness, proper training and using multi-factor authentication. It also recommends getting Cyber Essentials certified, especially if youโ€™re part of a supply chain. And donโ€™t forget the free Early Warning service โ€“ itโ€™s there to help you spot trouble before it hits.

Boards need to step up too. Cybersecurity isnโ€™t just an IT problem anymore; itโ€™s a business survival issue. The upcoming Cybersecurity and Resilience Bill will likely make board-level responsibility a legal requirement. So, if youโ€™re a director or senior leader, nowโ€™s the time to get involved.

And yes, the government is taking action. Ministers have written to FTSE 350 CEOs, urging them to prioritise cyber risk, require Cyber Essentials across their supply chains and sign up for NCSCโ€™s services. But this isnโ€™t just for big firms. Smaller businesses make up 90% of the UK economy and many breaches start there.

Next stepsโ€ฆ start small, stay informed and lean on trusted partners. CyberSmartโ€™s tools, like Patch, can help you keep software up to date without the hassle. Because in todayโ€™s world, cybersecurity isnโ€™t optional โ€“ itโ€™s essential.

Letโ€™s make the UK a safer place to live and do business.

Cyber threats are rising fast, but the UKโ€™s small businesses arenโ€™t powerless. The NCSCโ€™s new Cyber Action Toolkit offer a clear path forward.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has reported a 50% increase in nationally significant cyber incidents this year โ€“ 204 in total, the highest ever recorded. These attacks are affecting critical infrastructure, major retailers and transport networks. But small businesses are also being hit hard.

To help, the NCSC has launched a free NCSC Cyber Action Toolkit tailored for small organisations. It offers practical, step-by-step guidance to improve cyber resilience. No jargon, no tech expertise required โ€“ just clear actions you can take at your own pace.

The stats are sobering: half of UK small businesses faced a cyber attack last year and one in four experienced a cyber crime. These arenโ€™t isolated events; theyโ€™re part of a growing trend.

The government is responding. Ministers have written to FTSE 350 CEOs, urging them to prioritise cyber risk, adopt Cyber Essentials across supply chains and use NCSC services. The upcoming Cybersecurity and Resilience Bill is expected to make board-level responsibility for cyber risk a legal requirement.

Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue โ€“ itโ€™s a business-critical one. The good news is that support is available. The Cyber Action Toolkit is free, easy to use and designed to help small businesses build stronger defences.

Start with the basics: phishing awareness, multi-factor authentication and regular software updates. Tools like CyberSmartโ€™s Patch can help automate some of this, saving time and reducing risk.

Taking action now can make a real difference. The tools are there โ€“ itโ€™s just a matter of using them.

Windows 10 Support Has Ended: What Now for Your Business?

It has been almost two months since Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 10. For many, that marks the end of an era. For businesses, itโ€™s a little more serious; it means a shift in how you manage your IT security and planning.

So, what does โ€œend of supportโ€ actually mean?
Simply put, Windows 10 will still work. You can switch it on, log in and use your usual software. But from now on there will be no more free security updates, bug fixes or technical support from Microsoft.
Without regular updates, new security weaknesses will remain open, leaving an easy route in for attackers. Microsoft has been very clear about this, warning that โ€œwithout continued software and security updates, your PC will be at greater risk for viruses and malwareโ€. For organisations handling customer data or that are relying on connected systems, it could become a compliance or insurance risk.

Still Using Windows 10? Youโ€™re Not Alone

Recent figures suggest that around 40 per cent of all Windows PCs worldwide are still running it. That means hundreds of millions of machines remain on an operating system that is no longer supported. In the UK, consumer group Which? estimates that roughly 21 million people still use a Windows 10 computer. About a quarter of them plan to keep using it after support ends, even though it will leave their systems open to risk. Businesses are in the same position. Analysts believe that more than half a billion corporate PCs around the world still run Windows 10 (and many wonโ€™t have been upgraded in time).

There are a few reasons for this:
Hardware compatibility is one, as older but reliable machines do not meet Windows 11โ€™s stricter requirements.
Cost is another, with many companies delaying hardware refreshes while focusing on other spending.
And finally, the process itself can be complicated; large upgrades take time, planning and testing.

What Can You Do?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are the most practical options.

If your hardware supports it, upgrading is free and fairly straightforward. You can check by opening
If your device meets the requirements, Windows 11 will appear as an available upgrade.
Windows 11 offers stronger built-in security, better performance and a more modern design. It also supports newer features, including enhanced protection against ransomware and access to Microsoftโ€™s AI tools such as Copilot.

If your computers are not ready to move to Windows 11 yet, Microsoftโ€™s Extended Security Updates scheme can keep them protected for a limited time. Businesses can pay a fee per device, but its worth noting Microsoft have said the fee will be doubling each year after that.

For home users, there is a lower-cost version, and in some cases it may even be free. However, it should be seen as a temporary fix, not a long-term solution.

If your PCs are several years old, it may be time to start planning replacements. Modern devices are faster, more efficient and far more secure. While it involves some cost up front, investing in new machines often saves money in the long run through improved reliability and lower energy use.

Why Itโ€™s Important to Act Now

It can be tempting to put this off, especially if your computers are working fine but waiting too long can make upgrading harder and more expensive later. Running unsupported software can also create issues with cyber insurance policies and compliance frameworks, something many businesses only discover when they need to make a claim.

With some planning you can avoid disruption and spread the cost over time. Start by checking which machines are ready for Windows 11, set a budget for any replacements, back up key data and speak with UseIT or your IT provider for support and advice.

What This Means for Your Business

The end of Windows 10 is not just a software update deadline. Itโ€™s a reminder of how quickly technology moves and why keeping systems current is key to security and stability.

We chat with a lot of local businesses, and one thing we hear all the time is, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, weโ€™ve got backups.โ€
And thatโ€™s great, really it is. But to be frank, backups on their own donโ€™t always save the day.

When something goes wrong, whether itโ€™s a cyber attack, a server crash or someone clicking the wrong thing, the real question isโ€ฆ how quickly can you get back up and running?

A backup is just a copy of your data.
Recovery is what happens when you actually need that data back (and for your business needs to get moving again).

You could have all your files safely stored, but if it takes days to bring things back online, that still time and money lost.

Think about it:
Have you ever tried restoring your data from a backup?
Do you know how long itโ€™d take to get your systems going again?
Would your team know what to do if things went wrong?
Itโ€™s easy to assume everythingโ€™s sorted, but itโ€™s worth checking before you find out the hard way.

A proper recovery plan isnโ€™t only about computers, itโ€™s about knowing who does what, how to keep everyone informed and how to get back on your feet quickly.

When youโ€™re ready for the worst, you can:
โœ… Save time and stress during a crisis
โœ… Keep your customers happy
โœ… Protect your business reputation

At UseIT, we help businesses across Lancashire and beyond build proper recovery plans that actually work. We can make sure youโ€™ve got a plan that helps you bounce back fast.

So, if your systems went down today, how confident are you that you could get back to business quickly? If youโ€™re not sure, we can help you find out before it becomes a real problem.

The National Cyber Security Centre recently reminded every UK cyber professional recently that "Resilience Matters" just as much as defence.

Boards are now being asked to plan for recovery, not just prevention.

Itโ€™s no longer about โ€œWill we be attacked?โ€ but โ€œWhen it happens, how quickly can we recover?โ€

At UseIT, we see Incident Response Planning becoming as fundamental as disaster recovery once was.

Yet, it still fails for three common reasons:
1๏ธโƒฃ No preparation
2๏ธโƒฃ No senior ownership
3๏ธโƒฃ The belief that โ€œit wonโ€™t happen hereโ€

The NCSC is urging cyber professionals to work with Boards to make cyber resilience a top priority. The good news? You donโ€™t need to start from scratch; at UseIT we can help you test and strengthen your response plan.

โœ… With the right preparation, recovery can be faster, disruption reduced, and your cyber foundations stronger than ever.

Hereโ€™s a mini checklist to see how prepared you really are:

* Do you test backups regularly?
* Does everyone know who to contact if something goes wrong?
* Is there a written recovery plan?
* Do staff know how to spot suspicious emails?
* Have you tested how long it takes to restore systems?

Score yourself:

* 0-2 โ€“ Your business may struggle if an attack happens tomorrow
* 3-4 โ€“ Youโ€™re on the right track, but could do more
* 5 โ€“ Youโ€™re well prepared

At UseIT Computers, we work with businesses across Lancashire and beyond to make sure they:

Even without a full review, you can:

* Check your backups are recent and working
* Make sure everyone knows who to contact in an emergency
* Test restoring a file or two from your backups

Itโ€™s easier to do this now than fix a problem after itโ€™s too late.

If these scenarios made you stop and think, thatโ€™s good. It shows you care about keeping your business safe.

Call us or message our team today. Letโ€™s make sure your business can bounce back quickly, no matter what comes at it.
