In 1978, James Dyson noticed with regret that his vacuum cleaner was not working as well as it should. When he disassembled it, he discovered that the dust bag was clogged with dirt and that this was causing a loss of suction power. Not long ago, he had built an industrial cyclone unit for his factory that separated powder particles from the air using centrifugal force.
But would this principle work in a vacuum cleaner? He set to work. Five years and 5,127 prototypes later, he had created the world's first vacuum cleaner without a dust bag.
