Clip Joint has been out for a week now. It's pay what you want, and $0 gets you the same plugin as $29, on a perpetual license.

Ever pulled a clipper's threshold down and not been sure what it actually did to the track?

That's the problem the scope is there to solve, and it's the biggest thing in Clip Joint's window. It draws the clipper's output against a dB grid. The purple caps above the trace show how much level came off each peak, so a taller cap means a harder clip. The column at the right edge shows the output peak above the gain reduction.

How do you usually judge how hard you're clipping: ears, meters, or both? Show this to whoever taught you to set a clipper by ear.

Clip a whole mix in plain stereo and the sides take the same hit as the center, whether they need it or not.

Clip Joint's Mid/Side mode gives each lane its own Input, Threshold, Drive, Tilt, Softness, and Output. Drive the center for level, leave the sides mostly alone, and the mix gets louder without the image folding inward. Tilt decides where the clipping bites: toward +100 the low end goes in hardest, toward −100 the top end does.

When you clip a full mix, do you treat the sides differently from the center?

It's easy to treat a clipper as one setting plus a volume k**b. The same plugin can take a couple of dB off a master without anyone noticing, or make a snare the loudest thing in the room. What changes is how you set it up.

This carousel walks through three jobs: a snare, where you're meant to hear it; a drum bus, where Low Protect keeps the kick's weight; and a whole mix, where the clipping should disappear.

You may have heard this without putting a name to it. You push a drum bus into a clipper, and every kick hit seems to drag the rest of the kit down with it.

That's the low end being clipped. Low Protect in Clip Joint splits the signal at 100 Hz, runs only the content above the split through the clip curve, then adds the low end back. The split is linear phase, and the small latency it adds is compensated by your DAW.

"Keep every slap sittin pretty" is the part we care about most. Any clipper will make drums louder. Keeping them hitting while you do it is the hard bit, and it's the reason Low Protect and Density exist.

Most of us get more level out of a clipper the same way: pull the threshold down and accept the peaks we lose on the way.

Density is the other route. You leave the ceiling where it is, and Density lifts the whole signal while gently squeezing what sits just under that ceiling, so the quiet detail rises to meet the peaks. That's different from turning the input up, which only drives everything harder into the clip.

Nearly everyone builds a master bus in order, first stage through to last. Pete does it the other way round.

The logic is worth hearing even if you never adopt it. Turn the limiter on first, get a couple of dB of gain reduction so you can hear exactly what the loudness is going to cost, then work back through the chain filling in what's missing.

It runs against standard teaching, which is precisely why it's worth trying once. Does building backwards make sense to you, or does it break how you think about a chain?

An honest admission from Pete: he built End Game for himself first.

Not for a market, not from a feature list. Just the things that annoyed him in his own sessions, fixed one at a time until he had something he wanted to use. The commercial thinking came afterwards.

A lot of plugins are made the other way around, starting with what will sell and reverse-engineering the tool to match. Do you reckon you can tell which is which when you load one up, or is that a story we all like to tell ourselves?
