You were on the money. I took my cartridge off of the tone arm & sure enough, just as you said, the cartridge was mis-wired. What a mis-step!
I correctly reconfigured the wires and, voilà, glorious mono! May I say that mono records still sound good with the stereo switch on, though not to the degree when the mono switch is enacted. I don’t know if that is a result of my old ears or your phono stage being that good. I’m going with the latter.
