Windows 10 - End of Life October 2025.
Now is probably a good time to check your computer and think about how you will transition to Windows 11 if you are still on 10.
With the approaching end of life (EOL) of Windows, we are already seeing a rise in demand for Windows 11 laptops and PCs.
Sadly, many perfectly good laptops and PCs are not be compatible with Windows 11 because their CPUs have not got the built-in security that Microsoft now requires. After EOL, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, security patches or updates for Windows 10 which will make it more and more vulnerable to hackers and scammers. To be fair, for some the risk is low - if you just use it for internet browsing and emails, however if you use it for online shopping or banking, you need to be aware that you may loose any protection from your bank or credit card provider if you are using an unsupported platform.
If your CPU is compatible, there is no reason why you shouldn’t go ahead and upgrade now when it is offered in ‘Settings|Windows Updates’. From a user perspective, Windows 11 is not very different to 10 - they have moved a few icons around and have rounded the edges of the boxes - so it will quickly become familiar to use. Some very old software may not work but! so far, we have been able to find alternatives successfully.
If you see the message that your PC or Laptop will not upgrade to Windows 11, it is time to think of replacing it. All new units currently on sale will have Windows 11 but what about second hand or refurbs? This is where you need to be wary and watch out for scammers. Many sellers on Marketplace and eBay (even Amazon) are using hacks to force Windows 11 onto incompatible machines in order to sell them. They will seem to work initially but as soon as they collect updates from Microsoft they can be locked out. The key to ensuring you don’t get duped is to find out the CPU spec before you buy and look it up the CPU in Microsoft’s compatibility list. You can search Google for ‘Windows 11 CPU compatibility’. A simple rule of thumb is to look for the generation number - 8th gen or higher is usually ok.
To reassure you, all our refurbished units have the required spec to run Windows 11 natively. We try to keep a basic range of laptops and desktops in stock and,for those requiring something specific, we have a network of bone-fide suppliers to find exactly what you need. In addition to supplying a quality refurb we also provide a data migration service to transfer all your precious files, photos and documents making the whole process as seamless as possible
Why now? I expect demand for compatible replacements is going to surge this year which will make prices go up and delivery times extend. If you know that replacement is inevitable it is better to get ahead of the crowd!
