Does your brochure have to be A4 or A5?

They’re popular formats for good reason. But if you choose one simply because it’s what you used last time, you could be overlooking a useful design decision.

Format can affect how your content is presented, how the brochure feels in the hand, how easy it is to post and even how much impact it has when someone picks it up.

A different size, orientation, fold, paper stock or binding might be a better fit for the job.

The point isn’t to make a brochure unusual for the sake of it. It’s to choose the format based on what you need the finished piece to do.

Seven years of working together. More than £30 million raised. And a partnership that continues to give us new challenges to get our teeth into.

We’re incredibly proud of our relationship with Exeter College, Oxford, not just because of the work we’ve created together, but because of the trust that sits behind it.

When you work with a client over a number of years, you build up an understanding that goes far beyond a brand guideline. You get to know the organisation, its ambitions, and how it needs to communicate visually across its materials and touchpoints. That knowledge becomes part of the creative process, helping us ask better questions, challenge ideas where needed and create work that feels right for the client.

Our latest project has been a new legacy brochure, bringing Exeter’s wider campaign identity together with a subject that requires real sensitivity and clarity. We’re now turning our attention to the College’s next fundraising priority.

For us, this is exactly what a great client relationship should become: less about individual projects and more about a genuine creative partnership that gets stronger with every piece of work.

Yesterday, we welcomed Matt Ford from GF Smith into the studio to spend some time with some of our design team, sharing the latest stocks, colours and possibilities in paper.

The more our designers understand about the materials available to them, the more they can design with those materials in mind from the very beginning. A particular colour, texture or weight of paper can influence the direction of an idea, change how a piece feels in someone’s hands, or open up a creative route that simply wouldn’t exist if stock was only considered at the end of the process.

That’s why keeping close to what’s new matters to us. It gives our team a wider creative toolkit and means that when we’re talking to a client about how their brand or campaign could come to life in print, we’re able to bring informed ideas to the table, not just design something and then find a paper to put it on.

A big thank you to Matt for coming in and giving the team plenty of fresh inspiration (and some very nice paper to obsess over).

There’s something particularly satisfying about seeing a piece of branding you’ve created make its way onto the finished products. 👀

We recently worked with the Embassy Theatre, Skegness to create the logo and branding for their 100-year anniversary, celebrating an amazing century of entertainment.

The lovely team at the Embassy sent us a selection of centenary merchandise featuring our logo designs, including mugs, pens and notepads, and we couldn’t resist sharing them!

We’re delighted to have played a small part in celebrating such a significant chapter in the Embassy Theatre’s story.

Sometimes the clearest way to explain something is simply to show it.

Bute House Preparatory School needed a simple way to communicate the dos and don’ts of how its uniform should be worn and paired.

Starting with images of individual uniform items from the school’s website and existing guide, we used a combination of AI and Photoshop to create realistic student mock-ups showing the uniform in context.

The result turns a collection of separate garments and written guidance into something much easier for pupils and parents to understand at a glance.

It’s also a good example of how we’re using AI at TGDH.

Not for the sake of using AI, but where it gives our designers a practical new way to solve a communication challenge and create something that would otherwise be difficult to produce.

International Beer Day feels like a good excuse to look back at one of our favourite projects

Last summer, we were asked to design the artwork for a limited-edition beer can 'Crew Brew', created by Unity Brewing Co, celebrating Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance's 18th anniversary.

Supporting the work Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance do is always a highlight, this project's one we still look back on fondly.

Few publications are read from cover to cover.

People scan. They pause at images. They skip ahead to headings. They flick backwards to revisit something that caught their eye.

In reality, every reader creates their own journey through a publication.

That's why publication design is about far more than arranging text and images. Every decision, from hierarchy and typography to spacing and imagery, helps shape the order in which people discover information. It guides attention, creates moments to pause and makes complex content feel easier to absorb.

When it's done well, readers rarely notice the design at all. They simply enjoy the experience of reading.

It's one of the reasons publication design deserves just as much thought as the content itself.

Great design doesn’t stop at the artwork. Behind every print project, we put just as much thought into how the finished piece will be produced, exploring the print options that can enhance the creative idea and increase its impact.

For the Alleyn's School prospectus, some of the biggest decisions weren't about colours or layouts. They were about format, paper, binding and finishing, and how each one could help create a publication that felt premium, delivered more value for the client and was more sustainable to produce.

That's where Andy excels.

As our Head of Print & Editorial, he brings a wealth of print knowledge to every project, helping to shape the creative decisions that ultimately define the finished piece.

Joyful. Energetic. Sophisticated.

Those were the three words that shaped our thinking when Circomedia asked us to create the campaign for their Summer Spectacular.

Individually, they're easy enough to imagine. Together, they're much harder to achieve.

Push too far towards energy and everything starts to feel messy and overwhelming. Focus too much on sophistication and it can become distant, losing the playful spirit that makes contemporary circus so engaging.

The answer wasn't a single idea. It was a process of exploring and refining. Looking at different image styles, silhouettes, textures and layouts until everything started to work together.

The finished campaign looks effortless. But like any creative project, it only reached that point because of everything that came before it.

A school year means something different depending on who is reading about it.

For pupils and families, it is a collection of memories, milestones and familiar faces. For a prospective family, it is a first glimpse of the community their child could become part of.

Soundwave, the annual magazine we design for Mary Hare School, brings together pupils from Reception through to Sixth Form. That means organising a large amount of varied content while making sure every age group, achievement and experience feels like part of one connected school story.

The editorial design provides that structure.

Colour-coded sections drawn from Mary Hare’s identity guides readers through the different year groups. Flexible layouts give larger stories room to breathe, while image-led pages capture the energy and personality of school life. A consistent masthead and visual language make each new edition recognisably Soundwave, without making every year feel the same.

Print then gives the publication a different kind of value.

A substantial silk stock makes it feel more like a keepsake than a temporary newsletter, while Spot UV across the masthead adds a tactile detail that brings the identity to life as soon as the magazine is picked up.

We have recently completed the latest edition, continuing a publication designed not only to document the year, but to make the character of Mary Hare visible, tangible and memorable.
