New research just landed, and it’s a wake-up call for small businesses. 📊

The 2026 Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report found that 38% of UK small firms experienced a successful cyber attack in the last 12 months, the highest rate of any country surveyed. The global average was 29%.

The average cost of an attack for UK businesses? Around £27,000.

The good news is that businesses can reduce their exposure by tightening some of the basics, including stronger passwords, MFA, regular software updates and secure, tested backups.

It’s a good reminder to go back to basics and check the simple things that can make a big difference to your cyber security:

✅ Turn on MFA wherever you can
✅ Install software updates when they become available
✅ Back up your data and make sure those backups actually work
✅ Train your team to recognise suspicious emails
✅ Use a password manager instead of relying on passwords like “Password123!”

An IT fact you probably didn't know...

The word "bug" (as in, a glitch in your software) comes from an actual insect.
Back in 1947, engineers working on the Harvard Mark II computer found a real moth stuck inside one of the machine's relays, causing a malfunction. They taped it into their logbook with the note: "First actual case of bug being found."
And that's where the term "debugging" comes from. 🤯

We've come a long way since then! Thankfully most of what we fix these days doesn't involve insects.
