Please support our fundraising walk for the British Heart Foundation! 🙏

For those of you who perhaps didn't know, at the end of last year, our co-founder and long-serving MD, Tim Guest, required hospital care for a prolonged period of time and underwent major heart surgery.

We are all grateful that Tim is now well on the way to recovery, and it has been a great testament to the NHS and a small army of healthcare professionals who played a part in his treatment and rehabilitation.

To show our appreciation, the employees of Contedia Ltd are going on a 2-hour sponsored walk around the area of the Brockdale Nature Reserve, near Pontefract, on Sunday 8th March.

The aim of the walk is to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation, which, besides its world-class research work, provides trusted recovery guidance and invaluable emotional support for people suffering cardiac events.

If you would like to support this activity and the work of the British Heart Foundation, it would be brilliant if you could make a small donation here on the Just Giving page set up for the occasion.

To our families, friends, customers and suppliers, why not consider joining us on the walk for a little exercise and a chat! Reach out to any of your contacts within Contedia to find out more and arrange to join us.

Thank you.

Last week proved a stressful start back to 2023 for us and one of our larger customers of the IT Services side of . But, we really do feel like the extraordinary effort and commitment shown by our team shouldn't go un-applauded.

During their seasonal shutdown, our customer's premises was subject to repeated power issues, eventually resulting in one of their virtual servers, containing their Windows domain controller, DHCP, file and print services, being damaged and unable to boot.

Reverting immediately to the Disaster Recovery plan, which has worked flawlessly on numerous occasions for other customers over the years, and comprised full and incremental disk images replicated to on-site, off-site and Cloud locations for ultimate protection, it quickly became apparent this was not going to be a straightforward recovery.

To be clear, as is our routine practice, the backup images of all servers were verified automatically - to be 'good' by the disaster recovery software - and weekly screenshots were taken of backup images being booted in to a virtual recovery environment. So, we certainly didn't imagine that neither by hook or by crook, not one of the verified images from the three locations of recovery available could be restored!

As time progressed last week, the IT team worked in parallel with ongoing recovery efforts to provide meaningful stop-gap measures, providing a means of working in core third-party systems and file access.

After multiple colleagues worked tirelessly all week, including evenings, and in collaboration with the software vendor's most senior engineers in the US and Germany, we were forced to draw a line on Friday morning and effect the most undesirable 'plan B'.

At no cost to our customer, our IT team sprang in to action again and began the complete re-installation and configuration of a brand new domain - the only option remaining - and we have to hand it to the staff involved, who headed across the Pennines and worked towards midnight on Friday before returning early on Saturday and staying until the job was done, their commitment to 'the Contedia way' was outstanding.

This morning, our customer has been able to return to a far closer representation of 'normal' with every configuration, from user and security group permissions, mapped drives, printers, third-party application integrations all having been recreated and every PC and laptop joined to the brand new domain ad confused afresh.

We stand by our 12 years working with the software vendor's solution, despite the unfortunate and very costly experience on this occasion, but we would like you to hear first-hand what the difference is in Contedia's approach to both saying what we do, but then actually doing what we say.

We are our customers' IT departments and we feel they respect our partnership. We, in turn, show their business the respect deserved and take responsibility for making sure their business can rely on its IT.

A good testimonial from a high quality client speaks volumes for our IT services team's work. Adair Paxton's Simon Dalingwater has this to say about the firm's working relationship with Contedia:

“Adair Paxton have worked closely with Contedia for many years and we are more than happy to recommend their services to any professional business seeking a reliable technology partner.

In providing Adair Paxton with the ongoing support and maintenance our IT systems need, Contedia’s services have allowed us to operate efficiently, helping us in turn to grow our business.

The local community is something which is very close to 's heart. That's why we are offering no-obligation remote-support and advice for all SME businesses in the WF postcode.

Our resources are limited and, of course, we must continue to work hard to provide outstanding support to our existing customers, so we can't provide our usual Service Level Agreement to any business needing our help, but we'll do our best to help you through this period if we possibly can.

A somewhat surreal Friday afternoon as I get ready to leave the office having tidied my personal belongings, removed the stacks of paperwork and leave behind some new monitors, dock, keyboard and, of course a stylish mouse mat - the envy of many, I'm sure - for a yet another new colleague to sit down at on Monday.

Today is the last day I'll officially occupy a desk in this office, having moved in nearly 16 years ago with two desks and two analogue phones. I've had a desk in almost every area of our office, the last being the smallest out of a necessity to squeeze ever more bodies in. Now, I'm 'floating' for a few weeks until a few of us move in to a second office in Pontefract, which will allow us an opportunity to regain meeting areas and space to expand further in to.

Moments like this, it seems, can be sad, exciting and nerve-wracking, all at the same time.

I've just finished writing the next 'Workplace Innovations' piece for January's TopicUK Magazine. Having introduced custom applications in the current issue, next month we're learning about the opportunities to integrate different business systems in order to share data across the organisation and streamline workflows.

We find out what the term 'middleware' means and how cloud service providers are taking the effort out of making your software talk to each other easily and consistently.
