We are proud to share a landmark moment for Plessey Semiconductors: we have been acquired by Haylo Labs, a venture operator dedicated to scaling microLED businesses.

This marks the beginning of an ambitious new chapter for Plessey. Together, we will accelerate our mission to lead the future of AR/VR and optical computing, and AI-powered devices, industries projected to be worth around £600bn by 2034.

Over the next five years, we will:
• Invest over £100m to scale from low-volume manufacturing to high-volume global production
• Create and protect highly skilled jobs in Plymouth and the wider region

To celebrate the recent National Ice Cream Day, we welcomed back the Devon Vintage Ice Cream Van and treated our staff to a selection of luxury ice creams and lollies.

Unfortunately, we couldn't pre-book sunshine and blue skies, but that didn't deter anyone from heading outside and enjoying a little taste of summer.

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming six students to Plessey for Work Experience Week. Over the course of the week, they became immersed in life at Plessey—learning first-hand about our business operations, cutting-edge technology, and the culture that drives our innovation.

The students left us with some fantastic feedback, sharing how much they had learned about Plessey and our technology. Their enthusiasm was clear, and many expressed how the experience had inspired them to pursue a career in the semiconductor industry.

International Women in Engineering Day is held on the 23rd of June each year. It's a day to celebrate the brilliant female engineers of the past and the innovators who are shaping our future.

In recent years, we have recognised with female-led progression workshops, panels and roundtables. This year, we asked our female engineers how they wished to support this initiative. Their suggestion was to simply shine a spotlight on a female engineer who has inspired them to be where they are today.

The last few weeks, spring has definitely sprung here at Plessey! With flowers blooming, trees turning green, and the picnic area being used again, we're certainly glad to have the sunshine back on site. Anyone fancy a lunchtime stroll?

Last week, we completed our first round of Toyota Lean Development Programmes through the Toyota Lean Management Centre (TLMC). Twelve of our staff undertook group projects to help improve our business. The groups visited the Toyota site in Derby to see the Toyota Way in practice, and Toyota visited our site several times to coach the teams on their projects.

We look forward to our next round of projects and continuing to develop the “Plessey Way” over the next few months.

Last week, we joined several other businesses at Ivybridge Community College for their annual careers fair, as part of their programme. It was lovely to get to speak to so many students and their parents, getting them excited about the possibilities of a career in semiconductor engineering. We hope to see some of the same faces again at the Ivybridge Science Day, work experience, and maybe as future employees!

High-tech remains an incredibly competitive field, and many can feel shut out by academic struggles. However, here at Plessey, we see the value in transferable skills, wherever they come from. Take Carlo, for example, who uses the skills he learned from his carpentry and joinery trade to push him into facilities project management.

"I left school at 16, facing academic challenges, and chose carpentry and joinery. This hands-on path ignited my passion and led to higher education qualifications."

In a high-tech company, It is so easy to get wrapped up in the technical knowledge required, but everyone can work on the essentials of communication and relationship building.

While he's still early in his career, that hasn't stopped Tobias from learning the power of a good network in the world of procurement. Rather than money making the world go round, he sees the power in people and learning from even the smallest interactions.

Career paths don't have to be conventional, and no one knows that better than Hannah, a process engineer here at Plessey. Working to fund her studies ignited a new passion and opened up a completely unexpected career path. Swipe to see her advice to those starting out!

"I went to university to study Marketing while working for Plessey Semiconductors. By the time I finished my degree, I wanted to pursue a new career in Engineering. Although it seemed scary to not use the degree that I worked hard for, I am now both educated and a Process Engineer. This proves it's never too late to retrain and follow a new career goal even if it seems scary."
