Our MD Lucy Harrier attended this morning’s United Nations Global Compact Network UK Members’ Breakfast, where discussion focused on AI in the workplace.

These opportunities for exchange are foundational to the business community’s efforts to adapt to rapidly evolving workflows and embrace new technologies in ways that honour our shared values, and we’re grateful to benefit from others’ perspectives and and share our own in such a forum.

There’s no getting around it: AI is now part of everyday publishing. AI can be used to draft or rewrite text and to check grammar, and can churn out a passable summary in seconds. As AI tools become more capable, it’s only natural for people to think that traditional editorial roles – especially copy-editing – are on borrowed time.

We beg to differ. AI is changing workflows, but it can’t replace the human judgement that gives credibility to professionally published documents. If anything, it’s making that judgement more visible and more valuable.

Our MD Lucy Harrier attended the Investors in People Celebration Event held yesterday in Glasgow.

This was an occasion to recognise the achievements and ongoing commitments of all IIP-accredited organisations, and to celebrate our own Silver award.

An excellent keynote presentation by Petra Velzeboer on 'Trust under pressure: leading people through change when it matters most' was followed by a panel discussion on building and maintaining trust in the workplace, a principle that is foundational to our ethos and engagement in building a positive workplace culture.

Yesterday, Fran and Rebecca helped out at the Step up with Enterprise event at Glenalmond College. Pupils were entrepreneurs for the day, developing their problem-solving, teamworking and business skills. It was great to see them come together to make and sell products, with the aim of making the most profit. They even took part in the Prepress Projects literature challenge, creating some amazing stories about the history of Glenalmond.

Thank you to Matt Stewart for inviting us, and to Glenalmond College for being so welcoming!

Six weeks and 2,834,842 steps later, our teams have covered nearly 1,240 miles in this year’s Spring Step Count Challenge! Come rain or shine, we’ve all felt the benefits of getting out and about. Some team members shared their challenge highlights:
“Mine was discovering a little 0.8-mile walk that I can do every lunch break to add an extra 4 miles to my miles per week.” – Fran
“I enjoyed getting out into spring and seeing all the trees and flowers change as the weeks went by.” – Nathalie
“My favourite part was listening to and watching the birds. I even came across a woodpecker!” – Catherine

We hear the term ‘copy-editing’ bandied about a fair bit in the publishing industry (sometimes interchangeably with ‘proofreading’), but what does it actually mean?

Copy-editing is a step distinct from developmental editing, where content is evaluated and organised, and from proofreading, where text that has been set out in its final layout is checked for errors. Instead, copy-editing calls for reading a text thoroughly and proposing changes for consistency, clarity and correctness – taking what’s written and refining it into its best version.

We’re on to the last leg of the Step Count Challenge, and the sudden onset of summer temperatures over the weekend has helped boost our numbers to a Prepress total of 2,453,930 steps!

The Prepress teams are in the home stretch of the Step Count Challenge: Prepressers have walked total of 2,096,170 steps or nearly 917 miles! But most importantly, we're getting out into nature, seeing sights close to home and further away.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and Prepressers are building mentally healthy habits – moving and spending time in nature – thanks to the Step Count Challenge. We've even passed the million-step mark, hitting a combined total of 1,564,257 steps! 🥾
