One of the biggest misconceptions about vehicle telemetry is that it’s just about knowing where something is.
Location tells you where your assets are. Condition tells you what is happening to them.

A vehicle might still complete its route while a problem is quietly developing. Battery performance slowly dropping. Equipment taking longer to respond. Components working harder to deliver the same result.

Individually, those changes are easy to ignore.

Together, they create an early warning system.

The real value of telemetry isn’t collecting more data.

It’s turning small changes into decisions that prevent bigger problems.

We covered all this and more in yesterdays blog, take a sec to read it if you have a spare 5.

How can commercial vehicle telemetry turn fleet data into fewer breakdowns?

A breakdown rarely begins when a vehicle stops. The warning signs are usually there much earlier.
A battery taking longer to recover. A refrigeration unit working harder than usual. A controller resetting unexpectedly.
A component drawing more current than it used to.

The challenge is seeing those signals early enough to act.

Our latest blog explores how commercial vehicle telemetry helps fleets move beyond simple tracking and use real-time vehicle data to make better maintenance decisions.

Because the most valuable data doesn’t just tell you where something is.

It tells you what needs attention before downtime happens.

A working prototype is an important milestone.

But it’s not the finish line.

The real test starts when that product leaves the controlled environment of a workshop and begins dealing with the real world.

Power fluctuations. Vibration. Temperature changes. Connectivity issues. Operators using the system every single day.

At TAD, we design electronics with that reality in mind.

Whether it’s a telemetry system, vehicle controller, monitoring device or completely bespoke solution, we think beyond “does it work?” and focus on a bigger question:

Will it keep working?

From initial design through to prototyping, manufacturing and lifetime support, we help turn ideas into electronics built for long-term use.

Because reliable products aren’t created at the end of development.

They’re designed that way from the start.

This week, Rob takes a closer look at one of the foundations behind every successful project: Electronic Design.

Good electronic design is about much more than creating a PCB that functions on a workbench. It’s about understanding how a system will behave in the real world - how it handles power, how it performs under harsh conditions, how it can be manufactured efficiently, and how it can remain reliable years after deployment.

The decisions made early in the design process often have the biggest impact later, influencing reliability, supportability, performance, and long-term cost.

Watch Rob explain how thoughtful electronic design helps turn ideas into robust, real-world systems.

For VirCru, the challenge wasn’t simply collecting data.

It was making remote visibility genuinely useful.

Boat owners needed confidence that they could understand what was happening without physically being there. Battery status, shore power, movement, bilge levels, temperature, smoke detection - individually these are all valuable signals, but on their own they can quickly become noise.

We designed and built a monitoring system centred around a connected hub and wireless sensors, bringing those separate data points together into a clear, usable view of the vessel.

The result wasn’t just more information.

It was better visibility, faster awareness of potential issues, and a system designed to help people act before small problems became bigger ones.

The best monitoring systems don’t just tell you what happened.

They help you see what might happen next.

How can fleets prevent refrigeration failures before loads are at risk?

Cold-chain failures rarely start with an alarm going off. More often, the warning signs appear much earlier:
A refrigeration unit takes longer to pull down to temperature. Recovery slows after door openings. A controller behaves inconsistently. Power becomes unstable. Everything still appears to be working, but the system is already telling a story.

The challenge is that these small changes are easy to miss until they become missed deliveries, compromised loads, emergency callouts, or expensive downtime.

In our latest blog, we explore how transport refrigeration monitoring can help operators identify problems earlier by looking beyond simple temperature readings and using real-world operational data to spot risk before failures happen.

This week, Tristan Dargay talks through one of our best-known projects: DeterTech’s PID360.

Designed for rapid deployment in harsh environments, PID360 combines:
- 360° monitored coverage
- remote communications
- rugged low-maintenance electronics
- long-life power strategy
- reliable detection and alert systems

The challenge wasn’t just building the hardware.

It was creating a system that could be deployed quickly, left unattended for long periods, and trusted to keep working in real-world conditions.

For Hultsteins, reliability and usability mattered just as much as performance.

Their existing refrigeration control system had become difficult to maintain, expensive to update, and increasingly impractical for real-world fleet operation.

We redesigned the system around:
- modular electronics
- simplified wiring
- a clearer HMI
- remote configuration through a web interface
- CAN integration for additional vehicle insight

The result wasn’t just a more modern control system.

It was a system that was easier to service, easier to operate, and better suited to long-term fleet use.

That’s what good transport electronics should do:
reduce operational friction, not create more of it.

One of the biggest mistakes in fleet monitoring is assuming that more data automatically means better decisions.

In reality, most operations teams don’t need more dashboards. They need clearer signals.

A single fault code rarely tells you much on its own. But repeated voltage dips over several days? A refrigeration unit taking longer to recover temperature after every stop? Increasing current draw from a component that used to behave normally? That’s the kind of information that actually helps teams intervene before downtime happens.

The real value of vehicle data isn’t visibility for the sake of it. It’s context.

Good telemetry should help people answer practical questions quickly:
Is this vehicle healthy? Is something degrading? Does this need attention now, or can it wait until planned maintenance?

When systems are designed properly, data stops being noise and starts becoming operational confidence.

Do you really know your fleet’s problems before vehicles go off the road?

Because downtime rarely starts with a breakdown. It starts with the warning signs nobody sees early enough.

Our latest blog explores how real-time vehicle data, telemetry, and smarter diagnostics can help fleet operators spot issues before they become expensive disruptions.
