Why are High Ceiling Buildings a Challenge for Fire Detection?

Modern buildings are getting taller, from high‑bay warehouses and automated storage facilities to exhibition halls, university atriums and major transport hubs.

As ceiling heights push beyond 25 metres, and in some cases over 40 metres, traditional smoke‑based detection becomes increasingly unreliable. Smoke has further to travel, cools and disperses on the way, and is heavily influenced by ventilation and natural air movement.

Extreme temperatures can create significant challenges for fire detection, particularly in cold storage, refrigerated logistics and high-temperature industrial environments.

Ciqurix: Video Fire Detection technology is designed to operate in demanding temperature conditions, detecting the physical presence of flame rather than relying on smoke or heat travelling to a detector. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last Wednesday, 9th September, for our CPD‑accredited session: Compliant Video Flame Detection, LPS 1976 and Real‑World Applications.

The 90‑minute webinar explored how Video Flame Detection (VFD) delivers reliable, standards‑aligned protection in environments where traditional technologies struggle; from high‑ceiling warehouses to cold‑storage facilities and complex industrial sites.

We discussed the development and scope of LPS 1976, performance expectations, false‑alarm immunity, and how VFD now provides a level playing field equivalent to EN 54, opening new markets and enabling specification based purely on suitability.

Modern buildings are increasingly being designed with higher ceilings and larger internal volumes. While this trend is well established in high-bay warehouses and automated logistics facilities, it is equally evident in exhibition centres, commercial atriums, university buildings, aircraft hangars and other architecturally ambitious spaces.

As building height increases, traditional fire detection technologies become less suitable, particularly where smoke has a greater distance to travel before reaching ceiling-mounted detectors. High Airflow, Dense Storage & Access Issues

Storage and distribution centres bring together a mix of conditions that make traditional fire detection inherently difficult. Cold and frozen storage, FMCG and grocery operations, high bay racking, long term and bonded warehousing, automated systems and 3PL logistics all share a common challenge: large quantities of closely packed goods that can rapidly fuel and spread a fire.

These environments often contain flammable products, dense storage and high-bay racking that challenge conventional fire detection, making installation, maintenance and reliable early detection increasingly difficult. In some cases, traditional detection can even become counter-productive, triggering nuisance alarms or failing to respond quickly enough.
