Today we're going to be debunking a prolific myth that has been harassing the tech repair industry for a while now... RICE!

Many people believe that putting a water damaged device in rice will "draw the water out" or dry the water so the device is safe to use. Unfortunately this is false information, incorrect, fake news (whatever you'd like to call it).

Here are the facts:

1. Damage to your device occurs within the first 3 seconds of it taking in water.

2. The water we commonly come in contact with is full of other chemicals such as chlorine, calcium, sodium, dirt etc. It is these chemicals which conduct electricity. Once water dries, these chemicals remain in a clumpy, powdery form.

3. The chemical residue will eat into the circuit board over time and eventually kill the device. Even though your uncle's mate's dog's pet's mum put her phone in rice and it works, it's lifespan is going to be incredibly limited. Who knows when it will die?

4. Most importantly: Leaving a device in rice is the same as doing NOTHING!

What should you do? Well the first thing is to turn the device off and try to remove the battery. If the battery is difficult to get to, take it to a local repair shop to get them to clean the device out. Removing water in its liquid form is far easier than trying to clean corrosion after weeks and weeks.

So if you drop your phone in a puddle, the sink or loo, call GMC Tech to do a professional clean for you!

Dear valued customers.

During this difficult time I have decided that in order to try to prevent the spread of Covid-19, GMCTECH will no longer be operating from WATERLOO ST until further notice

I understand that with children being at home etc you may have some devices that need repairing to keep them occupied. I will be working from home, so if you have transport you are welcome to visit me at home where you can wait outside in your car for the repair to be done. For those without transport I will try where possible to offer a secure hygienic pick up and drop off service. I will be wearing gloves and a mask and all devices will be wiped down with antibacterial wipes before and after the repair.

If there are any changes to these arrangements I will update everyone as and when I can.
