Do you know the story behind these pictures?

One of the best parts about capturing and digitising heritage pieces is that we get to learn the story behind them.
Recently we have worked with Museum of the Home to digitise their fascinating collection for the new Splats and Spindles exhibition.

We take them for granted but what is the history of the modern chair?
Did you know that each part has its own name? Did you know that you can identify where they have come from by those parts?

Valentine's day has a hilarious forgotten custom that we should bring back.
Gaining popularity in the mid 19th century continuing into the 20th the Victorians created a creative and funny way of rejecting unwanted advances and sending a very clear message to those they did not care for on the day of love.
Vinegar Valentine's Day cards. These cards were sold in the United States and Britain and also donned the name "comic valentines." These cards were decorated with unique and sometimes grotesque caricatures. Featuring a short line or poem that, instead of offer a message of love and affection, it criticized, rejected, and/or insulted the recipient. They were often sent without a signature, enabling the sender to speak without fear. Oh, and for added spice, the recipient of these insults paid the postage on delivery.

Making the darkness visible, underexposed images were once seen as completely useless however that changed because of one woman in particular. For the world of negatives there have been many very important figures but one woman that we would like to recognise is Barbara Askins. Barbara worked as a chemist for NASA and is known for her pioneering invention of the process that creates Autoradiographs.
But what is an Autoradiograph and why is it so important?
To create an autoradiograph the original, faded photograph or negative is treated with a radioactive compound that interacts with the silver particles still present in the image. Then exposing a second emulsion to this radiation on the film it reproduces the image with significant increase in density and contrast.
In short the reactions between the original negative with radiation and the 2nd emulsion makes the invisible visible on a new print with significantly higher detail revealing lost elements.
This revolutionised the world when it came to deep space photography and reducing the radiation needed to form an X-ray image.
But why does this apply to us?
This technique also is prominently used in restoration of old photography. Being able to bring back 80 to 90% of the underexposed negative. However it isn't just negatives either the technique is also used to analyse and restore other types of historical documents and even in the examination of paintings, such as those by Rembrandt.
It truly pathed the way for restoration, bringing back what was lost to time. Inspiring techniques to restore digitally.

In the age of digital, physical media always finds a way of shining through showcasing its resilience and reliability. Last year many governments found themselves continuing to invest in large scale recording processes of their files by converting them into microfilm. Safety is always key and it never hurts to have a back up.

Here at Genus we manufacture and distribute the widest range of digital microfilm scanning equipment, digital to microfilm writers, microfilm production equipment and microfilm / microfiche consumables available in the world.

Using the past to inspire the future. These incredible inhouse designs that we helped digitise for BRM remind us of that. This is a theme that we value and take with us into every choice we make. Looking at our history gives us a benchmark for progression, everything we are today is thanks to our past. Sometimes the answer to our modern-day dilemmas have already been solved before yet have been lost to time. This is why archiving is important.

What is an idea that you believe should be brought back from the past?
