I spent most of my working life in the corporate or SME market working for others. I was happy with the security and the knowledge that security was wrapped around not only myself but my family. The fact that I was working for others who profited from my experience and my efforts, I offset against safety.

It then comes as a blow when you find that even though you have risen in the organisation, that they are happy to discard you when it suits them. Many of my colleagues were dispatched for reasons that I thought were more and more tenuous. So why hadn’t I moved?

Well I knew that running a business was more than being a good salesperson and it needed a team of people with different skills and a big part of that is administrative work, when I wanted to be out with the potential clients making another sale.

That’s why we created Edge. We have a structure that enables good salespeople to get out to the client with all the support of a team around them, that allows them to focus on what they are best at.

So, Edge was modelled around the belief and my experience, that if we as salespeople are free to go out and sell, then that’s what we will do, and that makes money.

Covid, a lack of chips (or potatoes), and even a big ship stuck in a small canal have been given to me this year as excuses as to why things are taking so long.

However I am pleased to say that our goal of adding people to our Edge platform has been held up by none of these and is progressing nicely.

Now that we have our representation in the south-east of the country well on its way, we are turning our efforts to The North East, North West and West of the country. We are already in talks with potential partners in Bristol, Manchester and Hull areas but we still have a few opportunities left in those areas, well as further options in Leeds, Carlisle and Newcastle.

Starting out on your own can be scary. It took us a little while to see the income start to flow and you have no idea how grateful we were to see the first sale proceeds come into the bank.

Having a team of people around me was not just a great comfort but also paramount to our success. We had to start from nothing and it was the team of people on the phone making appointments and the IT systems keeping track of those calls that gave us the flying start we had. Every sale we made was a new client and that takes some work.

We chose to write our own CRM system that worked the way we wanted to in our industry not the way some software house thought we should work. We have amended the system as we have grown and developed all manner of cloud based data that helps me sell more to the new prospects and keeps me up to date with our own client base.

It’s those systems that we are bringing to Edge and that will help everyone become more effective. They are based on our experience and written by our software team.
