Running A Successful CIC Producing Eco Products & Employing People With Disabilities

On this week's show we chat with Sharon Tooke from Norfolk Industries about working with people with disabilities, developing products that are made from recycled materials or are plastic free, managing a business for which profit is not the first objective.

Norfolk Industries has been around for over 100 years, starting life as Norwich Workshops for the Blind. They are now part of a Community Interest Company producing products from recycled materials, employing people with disabilities and providing work placements to others in the local community.

Sharon started working there in 1996 as the PA to the previous 2 General Managers and then was offered the opportunity to step into the Managers position and grabbed it with both hands.

It's been her life's work to develop Norfolk Industries from an old sheltered workshop format depending heavily upon Local Authority funding to working towards operating as a financially viable business.

They now generate 97% of our income from the sale of goods and just 3% comes from Access to Work funding.

GREEN PR & TELLING YOUR SUSTAINABILITY STORY

On this week's show I chat with Caroline Aistrop from Green Spark Marketing who specialises in green PR and sustainability storytelling.

For over 30 years, Caroline has focused on inspiring people to be fascinated about the natural world and to make greener choices. She helps businesses, especially owners of small businesses, to tell the stories of all they're doing to be eco-responsible so they can both attract more customers and persuade others to become greener. This involves helping them to craft their stories and then tell these through their PR.

Caroline also specialises in the psychology of green (how people react to environmental messages) and how biodiversity and business are dependent upon each other.

She has been focused on being greener for many years and decided to work in wildlife conservation when she was 13 years old and that's guided her life ever since.

The HubFizz Show is always a snappy 10 minutes packed full of interesting and useful content and this week is no different.

** Caroline is running a coaching programme about telling your sustainability story in October so connect with her on social media to find out more.

She is also running a free 30 min webinar on Telling Your Sustainability Story next week - REGISTER HERE https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/telling-your-sustainability-story-a-bite-size-intro-tickets-168294596669 **

When you take time off work, do you switch off? Are you able to truly disconnect?

Business owners will often justify the excuse they ‘love what they do’ to keep pushing forward and find it hard to switch off. Richard St John’s describes this passion of a ‘Workafrolic’ rather than ‘Workaholic’ during his 8 Secrets To Success Ted Talk.

In our excitement and drive – we’re forgetting it’s a marathon, not a sprint and we need to take care of ourselves.

On this week's show I chat with Leon Davies , a consultant in sustainability business and lifestyle goals.

Leon says the single most important thing we can all do for our futures is learn and implement sustainability solutions in our lives.

It doesn’t matter if you are a business keen to go greener, an entrepreneur with a great eco-start up idea or an individual looking to do your bit for the planet. The time for change is now.

However, many people don’t know where to start with sustainability. They worry about the cost, the best practices and how to make change happen.

That’s where Leon comes in. With over a decade of experience in renewable energy, Leon has become an expert in sustainability practice and funding. He can help you find grants for new projects or enhancements, mentor you to launch a green business or simply help your household make simple swaps in your everyday life to reduce your carbon footprint.

If our planet is going to survive and thrive, we have to take collective action. That’s easier than you think with an expert consultant to guide you. Are you ready to get started?

We will be asking Leon about how people can get started, what sort of funding is out there for those who want to go greener, some of the projects he’s been involved in such as launching the UKs first zero emissions taxi service

Small Business Chat: Be Your Own Leader With PR

Last week we talked about the credibility of media relations and how it’s an effective and powerful tool to help you be your own leader.

Yet, the common barrier, speaking to small business owners and SMEs is that they don’t have the money, resources, or time to invest in PR activity? Does that mean you can’t be visible?

PR is often used as a strategic leadership tool, and in the final part of our mini-PR series – what else could you be doing to step up and show that you’re a credible voice?

Many great leaders have often incorporated public relations into their leadership style or philosophy. The following quote helps encapsulate and link the importance of a PR mindset.

“True leaders always practice 3 R’s: Respect for self, Respect for others, Responsibility for all their actions” – Unknown

- Respect for self – having a strong sense of purpose, mission, and identity and communicating this clearly (branding)

- Respect for others – understanding and communicating with all your ‘publics’ – not just those who’ll bring you fame.

- Responsibility for all their actions – ethics, integrity, transparency

What do you think represents a leader and how is that evident in their comms?

We’re using this final PR chat in our Small Business Chat series to join the dots – showing you how there are many ways on your PR checklist to build your credibility and support your goals.

Join us as we continue our series to help business owners demystify PR and achieve great results for their business.

Interested in using media relations to boost your profile, showcase your credibility, build awareness around your brand and services?

If you’re looking to promote your business in newspapers, magazines, online or broadcast, it’s important to understand that the media alas, doesn’t exist just to promote you.

Understanding what makes a story or pitch that journalists can use is crucial if you want to be featured. You can have the best product or feature in the world, but if there’s no story or no relevancy it’s hard to hit the target with your pitch.

We ask Julie Brown visibility and PR expert how to get media coverage and she provides insights on how to be more visible and profile you and your business. Learn more about what will make you a reliable ‘go-to’ source for journalists and what you absolutely shouldn’t do!

Julie is a former editor, writer, publisher and freelance journalist with 18 years of experience and helps entrepreneurs become more visible in their business and attract more of their dream clients. She specialises in using media coverage for business growth and offers online courses in PR, VIP days, 1-2-1 sessions and runs a done for you PR service too for a select number of clients. My Story

Hi I am Karen and the owner of HubFizz. I am passionate about the environment and social justice and try to live in an ethical, sustainable and cruelty-free way.

A big part of that is working with businesses who have similar values. I provide Website Design & Strategies and Tech Support for Eco-Conscious Business Owners in various sectors including: * Wellness, Therapies & Coaches * Plant-based Food & Drink * Consultants & Creatives * Artisans & Conservation * Permaculture & Organic (I am also doing a Permaculture Diploma) * Eco Products & Services * Green Technologies

I can create your website, help maintain your website, or improve your current site. I can add integrations such as a shop, SEO tools, email sign ups and other lead generation tools and offer advice on how to make the most of your site.

When a project requires, I work with a number of expert associates in other fields including: branding, copywriting, photography and PR. Let's help those doing good get more recognition! If you want to find our more or work with me then say [email protected] or visit https://hubfizz.uk
