It's not often my design work can be displayed here immediately but here is an exhibition, open to the public, currently at the Forum in Norwich.

It charts the history of the historic Silk Road trade routes, and the spread of religion, folklore and beliefs, from Nara in Japan to Norwich, using archaeological evidence and tracking various precious stones and artefacts to their sources.

I started designing it on the 18th April and the evolving brief came from Japan, Taiwan and Korea as the authors toured sites gathering pictures and information, creating some time difference challenges.

It has been a mammoth task and I cannot tell you how relieved I am to see it all in place today (20th May), with a replica scroll of the Kannon Bosatsu from Hasedera in Japan at its centre.

If you are in Norwich please take a look; if you are lucky you might hear the Karyōbinga Shōmyō Kenkyūkai group from Japan perform o-shо̄myо̄ (chanting) alongside the scroll. :-)

Back in the time of the dinosaurs, numpties like me used to sit up all night with paper, felt pens and glue and produce dummy visuals that might have required a little imagination to interpret but were the industry standard of the time.

No-one had even thought of the expression 'populate with text' back then, we just drew lines where the text would go knowing that we could guesstimate the number of words for a skilled copywriter to create.

Anyway, while clearing out old archives in the garage I came across this little box.

I would never thought such things would bring on a wave of nostalgia, this one brought back so many great memories! Happy days :-)

For once I can show you some relatively current design work as it was produced for me and not an external client.

Every year, for Valentine's Day, I produce a set of fantasy stamps with long-time collaborator, star illustrator, best man at my wedding, and general all-round nice guy Alan Batley.

Each year it's a new challenge, not just creating the narrative and the artwork but also embodying the background story to the stamps in order to provide our collectors with just enough supporting materials to suggest that the stamps are that little bit more real!

Here are some examples of the package produced, including the research materials - a children's story, a more adult story, and even some poetry, which wasn't as tricky for me to write as I thought it might be (which probably means it is actually not very good!).

All of which help provide an authentic-looking glimpse of another world - Laernu - and the romantic province known to lovers young and old (and those perpetually young at heart) as the Isle of Vue...

Goodness knows what we'll produce next year :-)
