O2 have informed us that they have seen a significant rise in Flubot victims on the mobile network, as well as all other UK networks.
Flubot is a sophisticated type of malware targeting Android users through fraudulent messages or notifications.
Here’s everything you need to know ⬇️
How does Flubot Malware spread?
They will alert the individual that they have a new voicemail or missed a call from an unknown number. This message will then contain a fake link that takes the user to a website that looks legitimate, and it will instruct the users to read or listen to what they have missed. Afterwards, it installs malware into the device.
The malware will ask the user to grant permissions to the app. When the user agrees, it will begin to attack various apps, for example, Android users’ mobile banking apps.
What to look out for:
🦠 Check to see if your phone has a Voicemail application with a blue cassette in a yellow envelope as its logo. Also check for delivery service apps, like FedEx or DHL.
🦠Text messages in different languages/an influx of unusual text messages.
🦠People on your contact list may inform you of strange messages or calls they received from your number. This could be a sign that FluBot is controlling your device.
🦠A spurt in unauthorized transactions on your device is another sign that the virus has infected your device and extracted financial details.
🦠Your service provider may contact you if a large number of texts are sent from your number. If you haven’t sent bulk messages recently, this is a clear sign that your device is infected with FluBot.
How to protect yourself from the Flubot scam:
✅Do not click the links in the text messages you receive even if they resemble a legitimate organisation.
✅Delete the message immediately.
✅Do not call back the number you received the text message from.
How to remove Flubot from your device:
☑️Try removing the infected app using Android Safe Mode. You can boot into Safe Mode by long-pressing the Power button and clicking on “Reboot in Safe Mode”
☑️An XDA user has developed an open-source app named “malinstall” which deleted FluBot.
☑️If neither of the above options works, factory reset your Android device. It’s better to not restore from your backups as they could potentially contain the infected app.
