Step 1: Track Your Spending
The first step in creating a budget is tracking your spending. Start by looking at all of your bank statements over the last 12 months. This will help you get an accurate picture of where your money is going each month. Once you have tracked all of your expenses, you will be able to see which areas need more attention when creating a budget. Each item should be marked P (PROFIT GENERATING), R (for anything necessary but could be REPLACED with a less expensive alternative), U (for any expense that it UNNECESSARY for delivering your offering).
Step 2: Set Financial Goals
Once you have tracked all of your expenses and created a general outline for how much money you are spending each month, it’s time to set some financial goals. Start with cutting the U expenses first. Ten find ways to the R expenses with replacements or alternatives. Then Evaluate the P expenses to see if you can structure the expenses more favorably. Are there any purchases that you would like to save up for? Do you want to start investing? Are there any debts that need to be paid off? Creating achievable financial goals will help keep you motivated while working on creating a budget.
Step 3: Implement the Profit First Method
The Profit First method helps with budgeting by putting aside money for investments, new employees, marketing and future plans so there is never an issue with cash flow.
