Remembering David King.
All of us at White Space Agency were saddened to hear of the passing of David King, founder of Princess Yachts, who played such a significant role in shaping not only a globally respected brand but also the wider marine industry. David founded the company that would become Princess Yachts in Plymouth in 1965 and spent more than six decades helping build it into one of the world’s most recognised yacht manufacturers.
On a personal level, Paul, our Creative Director, had the privilege of working with David for around 15 years through a previous business that he owned. Together, they worked on a wide range of projects supporting the Princess brand, from boat brochures and global advertising campaigns to international boat show collateral, photography and photo shoots around the world.
Throughout that time, Paul came to know David as an exceptionally loyal man. He never micromanaged, never questioned the value of a trusted partnership, and always focused on the bigger picture. If he believed you were helping Princess build its brand and grow its business, he backed you wholeheartedly. That level of trust and loyalty is something Paul has never forgotten.
David was also a regular visitor to the studio. Some of Paul’s fondest memories are of the countless brainstorming sessions he shared, discussing ideas, debating plans, meeting the wider team and simply putting the world to rights over a cup of coffee. He had an energy and enthusiasm that was impossible not to be drawn into.
He was the very definition of ‘work hard, play hard’. In business, his drive, ambition and determination to succeed were infectious. He inspired those around him to raise their game and never settle for second best. Yet away from work, he embraced life with equal passion, whether windsurfing in beautiful coastal locations or heli-skiing in the mountains. He understood that success wasn’t just about business achievements, but about living life to the fullest.
The marine industry will rightly remember David for his remarkable achievements and for building Princess into the globally respected company it is today. But those of us fortunate enough to have worked alongside him will remember much more than that. We will remember his character, his loyalty, his vision, his humour and his unwavering belief in people.
On behalf of everyone at White Space Agency, and personally from Paul, we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to David’s family, friends, the entire team at Princess Yachts, and all those whose lives he touched.
Reflecting on their years working together, Paul said:
“I had enormous respect for David and feel privileged to have known him. He was a remarkable businessman, an inspiring character, and someone who genuinely knew how to live life to the fullest. He will be greatly missed. The marine industry will rightly remember David for his remarkable achievements and for building Princess into one of the world’s most respected yacht manufacturers.”
Rest in Peace, David. You will be greatly missed.
