Measuring nearly six meters long and weighing close to a ton, Gustave is a legendary Nile crocodile believed to inhabit the waters of Lake Tanganyika and the Ruzizi River between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is often described as Africa’s largest crocodile, and local accounts have linked him to hundreds of human deaths, though exact numbers have never been independently confirmed.
What sets Gustave apart is not just his size, but his unusual pattern of aggression. Crocodiles typically attack humans out of hunger, territorial defense, or mistaken identity. Gustave, however, is said to strike repeatedly and opportunistically, sometimes without feeding on his victims—fueling speculation that his behavior goes beyond basic survival instincts.
Over the years, multiple efforts to capture or kill him have failed. Gustave reportedly bears bullet wounds from past encounters and has escaped several elaborate traps. One of the most well-known attempts, led by French crocodile hunter Patrice Faye, involved large baited cages designed specifically for him. While those traps captured smaller crocodiles, Gustave never took the bait—and vanished once again.
Whether exaggerated by myth or grounded in reality, Gustave remains one of Africa’s most enduring and terrifying wildlife legends: a massive predator that has survived humans, traps, bullets, and time itself.
