How would you prefer to learn?

In a classroom, with a live trainer online, at your workplace or at your own pace?

NILC offers all four training formats across its course range. 🎓

• Classroom: learn face to face.
• Live virtual: join an interactive session from home or work.
• Onsite: bring a trainer to your team.
• Self-paced online: work through learning in your own time.

The options available depend on the course. Tell us what you want to learn and how it needs to fit into your week.

Make your next email easier to answer

“Any thoughts?” can leave the reader wondering what you actually need.

Try a more specific request. For example:

“Could you check the dates in the attached draft and send any corrections by 3pm on Thursday?”

Before you press send, check three things: ✉️

• Is the action clear?
• Does the reader have the information they need?
• Have you included a deadline, if one matters?

Keep it friendly. Make the next step easy to spot.

What makes a work email easy for you to respond to?

Already using ChatGPT? Give your next training day a clear purpose

Think of one task you want to handle more confidently: researching a topic, creating content or improving a regular piece of work.

NILC’s one-day ChatGPT for Advanced Users course is designed for people who already know the basics. 💻

Explore stronger prompts, reusable ways of working and practical exercises you can relate to your role.

Bring your questions, too. Understanding the limitations and knowing what to check are part of using AI well.

Which column am I looking at again?

If you keep scrolling back to the top of a spreadsheet, try this small Excel fix. 💡

When your headings are in row 1 and your names or labels are in column A:

1. Select cell B2.
2. Choose View → Freeze Panes → Freeze Panes.
3. Scroll down and across.

The first row and first column stay visible, so you can keep your bearings. To undo it, use Unfreeze Panes in the same menu.

Try it on your next working list. Which everyday Excel task would you like us to explain next?

You don’t need “project manager” in your job title

Organising an event? Launching a website? Introducing a new process?

You are already dealing with project questions: what needs doing, who is doing it and how will everyone know it is on track?

Before the next meeting, try making three things clear:

✅ What the finished result should look like
✅ Who owns the next action
✅ When progress will be reviewed

Those questions are a useful starting point — and structured training can help you build on them.

NILC’s project management training includes PRINCE2 and AgilePM, with options to explore as you develop your skills.

Try the five-second slide test

Before your next presentation, show one slide to a colleague for five seconds. Then hide it and ask:

“What was the main point?”

💡 Treat their answer as useful feedback, not a memory test.

If the message was unclear, try removing one distraction, shortening the heading or making the key visual easier to understand. Then try again.

You can keep the supporting detail in your notes or a handout. It does not all have to compete for attention on the screen.

Clear slides. Stronger messages.

What is the first thing you would remove from an overcrowded slide?

Think you earn too much for funded training?

Don’t rule yourself out before checking which funding route applies. 🎓

PLA Core has an annual basic salary limit of £35,796. But PLA Digital has no earnings cap for eligible learners taking approved digital courses.

You must live in Wales and be aged 19 or over. Employment, self-employment or qualifying full-time carer criteria also apply, alongside the programme’s other eligibility rules.

That means earning above the PLA Core limit does not automatically rule out every funded option.

A new skill or qualification could be closer than you think — whether you want to progress in your role or change direction.

Funding is subject to full eligibility checks and course availability.

Copilot is open. Now what?

You don’t have to learn every feature at once. Start with a job you already need to do: draft an email, make sense of meeting notes or get a document started.

NILC’s one-day Introduction to Microsoft 365 Copilot course is designed for people new to the tool. 💻

Explore everyday uses across Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint through demonstrations and hands-on activities. Learn how to give clearer instructions and handle information responsibly.

The aim is to connect the learning to your working day, not simply collect a list of features.

Check your organisation’s data guidance and review AI-generated work before using or sharing it.

Get more from Excel, one small change at a time

Still scrolling through a long spreadsheet to find what you need?

💡 Try turning a simple list into an Excel table.

On a copy of your file, select the list and choose Home → Format as Table. Check the selected range and tick “My table has headers” if the first row contains your column headings.

Use the arrows beside the headings to filter the list. For example, show only enquiries marked “Awaiting reply”, rather than searching row by row.

The other rows are hidden, not deleted. Clear the filter to see them again.

Which list could you make easier to work with this week?

Word can do much more than most people realise

Microsoft Word is one of those applications almost everyone uses.

But most of us probably use only a fraction of what it can actually do.

Tables of contents, track changes, Mail Merge, bookmarks, document protection and smarter ways of working can make a huge difference when you regularly produce reports, proposals and business documents.

Today we’re running our Microsoft Word Advanced course — focused on exactly those practical skills.
