On this day 74 years ago, the NHS was created š The National Health Service was established on July 5, 1948. It was the first time anywhere in the world that completely free healthcare was made accessible to all citizens - rather than being exclusive to those who could afford it. It brought hospitals, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, opticians, and dentists together under one service - paid for by the taxpayer. Its founding father was the Minister of Health and Welshman Aneurin Bevan - pictured here talking to the NHS' first patient, 13-year-old Sylvia Diggory, at Park Hospital in Manchester. Mr Bevan once said: āThe NHS will last as long as there are folk left with faith to fight for it." š“ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó æā¤ļø
