πŸ”Ž SEO TIP #03: Does Google understand your website?

Your website might look fantastic, but does Google actually understand what your business does?

Search engines need more than attractive images and a nice layout to understand what your pages are about.

That's where good website structure comes in.

A few things worth checking:

βœ… Clear headings: Help organise your content and explain what each section is about.

βœ… Descriptive page titles: Tell people and search engines what they can expect to find.

βœ… Sensible URLs: Make your website addresses meaningful rather than a collection of random numbers.

βœ… Internal links: Help visitors and search engines discover other useful pages on your website.

And, of course, make sure the content itself is genuinely useful to your customers!

None of these things guarantees a place at the top of Google, but they all contribute towards making your website easier to understand and navigate.

Good SEO isn't about tricking Google. It's about making your website clearer and more useful.

🦍 **I've been building websites since 2010. A lot has changed since then!**

When I first started designing and developing websites, the internet was a very different place.

Smartphones were only just starting to change how people browsed the web, responsive design was still in its infancy, and the tools available to web designers were very different from what we use today.

I started freelancing in 2011, working with businesses including WSI Newcastle, Websites and Print and Bauer Media.

Then, in 2014, I launched Paper Voice, continuing to freelance alongside running my own business until September 2016.

Since then, I've watched web design evolve through mobile-first design, increasingly sophisticated eCommerce websites, bespoke functionality, improved user experiences and, more recently, AI.

But one thing hasn't really changed.

**A good website starts with understanding the business behind it.**

What does the business do? Who are its customers? What problems need solving? And how can the website make things easier?

The technology might change, but those questions are just as important today as they were when I started.

**16 years of building websites. 12 years of Paper Voice. Still learning. Still creating. Still solving problems.**

And still enjoying it! 😁

πŸ€– **AI can build you a website in minutes. So why hire a web designer?**

It's a fair question!

With so many DIY website builders and AI tools available, creating a website has never been more accessible.

And that's a good thing. For some businesses, particularly those just starting out, these tools can be a great option.

But there's a difference between having a website and having a website that's been carefully planned around your business.

When I design a website, I don't just think about how it looks.

I want to understand your business, your customers, what you're trying to achieve and how your website can help you get there.

That might mean improving the customer journey, making it easier for people to get in touch, helping your website appear in search results or developing something completely bespoke.

And when your business changes or you need help, you've got someone you can actually speak to.

**The question isn't whether AI can build you a website. It's whether that website will do everything your business actually needs.**

Your business shouldn't have to fit around your website. Your website should be built around your business.

It's tempting to give visitors every possible option, but when everything on a page is shouting for attention, it becomes much harder to know what's actually important.

Instead, ask yourself:
What's the main thing I want someone to do after reading this page?

That might be buying a product, requesting a quote, booking an appointment, arranging a viewing or simply moving on to the next useful piece of information.

Make that action clear. Make it obvious. And make it easy, especially on mobile.
When everything is important, nothing feels important.

Don't make your visitors wonder what to do next. Show them.

🎨 BEHIND THE BRAND #03: Great North Building Consultancy

A finished logo might look simple.
Getting there usually isn't.

When I started developing the identity for Great North Building Consultancy, I explored a number of different directions around the name and what the business represents, from the GN initials and compass points to direction, buildings and architectural forms.

As the concepts developed, certain ideas started to stand out.
🧭 The compass became part of the O in NORTH.
🏠 The A in GREAT developed into an architectural form.
πŸ”΅πŸŸ  Different colour combinations were explored before settling on the final blue and orange identity.

That's one of my favourite parts of branding projects: taking lots of possibilities and gradually refining them until everything starts to come together.

Swipe through to see some of the ideas that didn't make the cut, and how they helped shape the one that did.

The finished logo is the destination. The design process is how you get there.

Your website shouldn't just sit there looking pretty. πŸ‘€

It should be helping people understand what you do, find what they need, trust your business and take the next step.

Whether that's making an enquiry, booking an appointment, buying a product or doing something a little more bespoke.

A good website doesn't just represent your business. It works for it.

πŸ”Ž You don't need to rank for everything. You need to rank for the right things.

One of the biggest misconceptions about SEO is that you need to cram every service, location and keyword you can think of onto your homepage.

You don't.

A good website gives different pages different jobs.

Your homepage introduces the business.
Your service pages explain what you actually do.
Location pages can target relevant geographical searches.

Useful content can answer the questions your potential customers are searching for. Instead of starting with β€œWhat keywords can we squeeze onto this page?”, start with:
What is somebody actually searching for, and what would genuinely help them?

More keywords β‰  better SEO.

Give each page a clear purpose, create genuinely useful content and make it easy for both your visitors and search engines to understand.

🦍 A good-looking website is great. A good-looking website people can actually find is better.

⭐ CLIENT WORDS #02

One of the nicest things a client can say isn't just that they're happy with a website; it's that they still want to work with you years later.

I've worked with Adam Chetter across multiple websites over the last five years, so it was particularly lovely to receive this feedback.

Adam mentioned the quality of the work, but what stood out to me was what he said about reliability, honest advice and aftercare.

A website launch shouldn't be the point where your web designer disappears.

Websites evolve. Businesses change. Things occasionally need updating, fixing or improving. I've always wanted Paper Voice to be somebody clients can come back to when they need help, whether that's next week or several years down the line.

So I particularly appreciated this:
β€œWhat sets Steve apart is the aftercare. He doesn’t disappear once the job is done.”

And I might have to borrow Adam's description of working with Paper Voice:
β€œNo chasing, no hassle, just solid results.” πŸ˜„

Thanks for the kind words, Adam. They're very much appreciated.

πŸ‘€ Don't play hide & seek with your contact details.

Someone has found your website. They've looked through your services, they like what they see and they're ready to get in touch.

Don't make the last step the hardest one.

Your phone number, email address and contact page should be easy to find, especially on mobile.

And when they do reach your enquiry form, think about what information you actually need.

Name. Email. Message.

Do you really need their job title, company size, annual turnover, mother's maiden name and favourite biscuit? πŸͺ

Every unnecessary step is another opportunity for someone to give up.

If somebody is ready to contact you, make it ridiculously easy.

Good UX is often about removing obstacles rather than adding more features.
