Our August Tech Talk at Enigma Interactive took us to other dimensions, though a (mostly) linear history of putting things on screens 🖥️
This month's Tech Talk, delivered by Lewis Lane, took us on a journey through the history of computer graphics and gaming technology, from early text terminals to the new tools powering today's films and games.
We started with teletypes and early control codes, many of which still influence programming today, before exploring the subculture, creative constraints (and opportunities!) of text art, where people used text characters to create impressive images.
Lew then charted the evolution of digital graphics, from vector-based games such as Star Wars, through the clever world of 2.5D graphics. He even demoed a prototype game he'd built himself, showing how 2D calculations can create convincing 3D effects.
Some of the milestones along the way included:
🏍️ Tron (1982), the first film to make extensive use of computer animation, even though many scenes were still hand-painted. And not eligible for an Academy Award, due to its extensive use of this new technology…
💥 Doom (1993), whose popularity saw it installed on more PCs than Windows at one point, bringing 2.5D gaming to the masses.
🎮 Quake (1996), which introduced technology that still underpins modern game engines today.
🚀 Unreal (1998) and the rise of Epic Games Store Unreal Engine, alongside the growing importance of dedicated graphics hardware. What began as technology for gaming is now used across mainstream film and animation productions, from Love Death + Robots to Oscar-winning War is Over! (2023).
💡 We also touched on the moment NVIDIA popularised the term GPU in 1999, helping define a technology that has become central not only to gaming but to modern computing and AI.
The talk sparked a discussion about the technologies our team have worked with and grown up with, the innovations that changed entire industries, and where the next chapter of visual computing might head.
