On The Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ speech at the annual Mansion House dinner, EV Managing Director Chet Velani said

“It’s heartening to see the Chancellor acknowledge that the current system of financial advice and guidance doesn't sufficiently support people to make decisions for themselves. We’re looking forward to targeted support to improve customer outcomes.

The devil as ever is in the detail, and it’s crucial to ensure that this fresh approach enables people to understand the trade-off between risk and return. Accurate modellers are needed to consider the impact of customers’ decisions – especially concerning the volatility associated with investing in shares vs cash.

Providing individuals with access to robust modelling tools, to better explore any suggestions made to them, is key to successful targeted support. A swathe of disgruntled investors who aren't prepared for suggestions, some of which may expose investors to unintended volatility, could have a negative impact and we could end up in a worse place than before with consumer confidence. Employing the right technology, along with a customer focused approach is what will ensure success.

We continue to keep a laser focus on those proposals. The future of financial wellbeing is in sight.”

The tipping point: How technology is democratising financial advice

My opening speech at EV’s recent conference, WealthTech 2025: The Leaders Meet, centred on how we’re at an industry turning point.

While other industries have been revolutionised by digital-first approaches, leveraging consumer data and AI, financial planning has remained relatively stagnant. Pre-RDR, up to 35% of individuals had access to advice, while today that figure is 9% (*based on the FCA's latest Financial Lives survey published in May).

This regression is especially troubling when we consider the effect of pension freedoms and how people need more help than ever with complex financial decisions.

Why now?

As I explained at WealthTech 2025, this can be a moment of optimism, with three factors creating a significant opportunity.
