Are you responsible for that's running obsolete PLCs & HMIs?

You really need to have a plan in place..

1. Backup copies of software - vital for a 'what if scenario'.
2. Electrical schematics - these should be easily accessible to help fault finding & reduce downtime.
3. A comprehensive spares list and availability check - should be a priority and carried out to help reduce downtime should any hardware issues suddenly arise.
4. Planning in PLC migration and PLC upgrades - generally advised wherever critical machinery and are using obsolete hardware, especially if you are looking to run your Automation into the future.

By taking these steps there's no reason your automated plant, machinery and process control systems cannot run for many more trouble free years, with added peace of mind.

Obsolete can fail at anytime. Often, reactionary repairs or a mad scramble to find spares off eBay follow, but that’s no way to be running critical automation, manufacturing plants or process control systems.

However, obsolescence planning and scheduled PLC & HMI Upgrades, when implemented correctly, are proven to reduce downtime and increase productivity. Often, the ROI can be rapidly minimised through reduced downtime and maintenance alone!

The movement and sourcing of spares are genuine options, more so where downtime & stoppages simply don’t matter. However, for uptime critical applications, inc. factory production lines & essential automation, planned PLC & HMI Upgrades should be prioritised.
