So why are you doing this?
It's a question I've been asked by friends, family and some that have been in touch so far. The answer is a relatively simple one. It isn't fair that wealth should determine your opportunities in life. In what is becoming an increasingly virtual world, what was once seen a luxury is becoming a necessity. There are very few job roles or forms of education now that don't require you to have access to a computer and internet access at home
To give an example...
While running as a commercial enterprise, we had a customer not so long ago enquiring about getting her computer to on to the internet. After talking and taking a look it became apparent that an unscrupulous seller somewhere had sold this person a near 20 year old computer for around 10 times it's market value. Knowledge of technology is often limited meaning people rely on the good faith of sellers (both private and trade) to tell them what they're buying in suitable. Sadly, this is often and certainly was here, not the case
What made me so frustrated on this occasion was that it was made clear that the computer was being bought for a daughter to complete her school work through lockdown - something it was certainly not suitable for. So there I am, stood in front of someone trying to do their best for their daughter, someone who has spent every penny they have trying to ensure their daughter has the best future they can, only to find they've been taken for a ride. Anyone with any kind of humanity would feel compelled to help
Unfortunately, this story is not unique. It (and more) happens daily. I've been repairing/building computers professionally for around 5yrs. Overcharging, poor workmanship and bad recommendations are common. People are often drawn in by glossy ads and are taken advantage of because they don't have the knowledge to challenge. And why would they? It isn't taught anywhere.
So you are left with three alternatives. Pay someone for their expert advice. Not ideal if you can't afford it. Trust the sellers word. Again not ideal; they are trying to sell to you. Or do your own research. And that just isn't really practical. You could spend days researching and still not come up with the right answer
That's where we come in...
