Urgent request to overhaul fire fighting equipment in a holiday let at 2pm, installed by 6pm! 🦸‍♂️

On arrival:

2 x counterfeit fire blankets, 2 x 1kg Powder extinguishers, no signage, no logbook. Nothing ever serviced, extinguishers due for replacement 2 years ago! Both pressure gauge needles were in the red zone indicating high pressure. This can result in leaking and rupturing during discharge ❌️

On departure:

2 x genuine kitemarked fire blankets, 2 x 2L FireXO extinguishers and photoluminescent signage professionally installed. Fire logbook and clear information provided regarding all weekly, monthly and annual inspections and services ✅️

The difference between counterfeit and genuine fire blankets?

Counterfeit:

❌️ CE mark - there is no CE scheme for blankets!
❌️ No label on blanket with manufacturer info
❌️ Instructions poorly translated

Genuine:

✅️ British Kitemark displayed on the casing
✅️ Label on the blanket with manufacturer info
✅️ Instructions are clear and concise

NEVER purchase them from online marketplaces. There is a high chance the product will be counterfeit and in an emergency, it will NOT work!

200 electrical appliances tested today and 75 failed, all with serious issues as shown in the photos 😳

Heavy damage to casing and flex, exposed insulation and live copper, loose wiring, fuses replaced with metal, earth continuity and polarity test fails, heavily overloaded extensions and fly leads, counterfeit adapters, damaged outlets and 3-pin/commando plugs. All posing serious fire and electrocution risks 🔥⚡️

As a dutyholder, you are legally required to ensure that all electrical systems and equipment are constructed, maintained, and used in a way that prevents danger, so far as is reasonably practicable.

Urgent repairs are being carried out and new systems of work being implemented imminently. The extent of the damage and dangers within this business, and potential repercussions of things going wrong, have definitely sunk in! 💭

Insufficient provisions are something I commonly find during a fire extinguisher service, particularly for class F (cooking oil) risks 🍳

The minimum number and rating of class F extinguishers are determined by using the table provided in the standard (BS5306-8:2023) and is based on the exposed surface area of the largest fryer in sqm. Stored cooking oil also requires fire extinguishers, which is often forgotten!

During a recent service a single 75F Wet Chemical extinguisher was available for a Blue Seal fryer with an exposed area of 0.1482, meaning the minimum requirement was not met. It was also located too far away from the stored oil, hidden behind a door, had no signage and was well overdue an extended service!

Taking into account multiple factors, I supplied and commissioned 2 x 75F Wet Chemicals, along with a 2kg CO2, fire blanket and signage, near the fire escape to create a single fire point. All equipment is now clearly visible, easily accessible, near the fire escape and within a 10m travel distance of all class F risks, as required by the standard ✅️

Important notes:

🌧 A fryer with a surface area greater than 0.4sqm will require a fire suppression system PLUS class F fire extinguishers! Do not keep adding extinguishers - 2 at the most!

⚠️ NEVER use anything other than a class F fire extinguisher on a class F fire! It will make the fire worse and likely splash around very hot oil.

📝 ALWAYS check the requirements of your fire risk assessment and insurer. Ensure your FRA is regularly reviewed. This is a statutory requirement!

100 electrical appliances PAT tested for Watchet Baptist Church & friends (The Sanctuary) and the annual fire extinguisher service carried out for The Wheelhouse Restaurant in Minehead. New 6L Wet Chemical, 27A Fluorine Free Water and CO2 extinguishers supplied and installed in accordance with the standard 👌
