A small handful of issues found recently, all repaired or removed from service making a number of businesses alot safer! ⚡️🔥🔌

Key take aways:

1️⃣ Do NOT purchase electrical items from online marketplaces. Whilst plenty of electrical items are genuine, a HUGE number are not. This in increasing very quickly.

2️⃣ Rust inside your microwave? Stop using it and replace it! It's potentially dangerous due to the risk of leakage and arcing. Besides, cooking your food in it is not pleasant 🤢

3️⃣ Most hazards are clearly visible. Damaged plugtop? Exposed copper or insulation? Joined and taped flex? Stop using it and repair or replace it. If it's not as the manufacturer intended, don't just ignore it!

4️⃣ Overloaded extension leads. High-powered appliances such as kettles and microwaves should not be permanently used with extension leads. Have additional outlets installed instead. Burned outlets and brittle casing caused by heat are some of the most common issues I find.

This is just a small selection. I find hundreds of safety issues like this every month.

We ALL have a responsiblity for electrical safety!

An amazing piece of history added to my old fire extinguisher collection this week...

A vintage solid copper and brass Empire No 2-C fire extinguisher manufactured in 1910 by John Kerr & Co. This used a soda-acid system that was activated when turning it upside down. When inverted, a glass vial of concentrated sulphuric acid dropped down a metal inner cage and the impact of the white lead/ceramic stopper smashed the glass vial, released the contents which mixed with water and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), created a massive build up of carbon dioxide gas and forced the contents through the hose. This was designed to be used on class A fires e.g. wood, paper and textiles. There is still alot of residue inside the extinguisher and whilst the unit itself is in excellent condition, the original hose is very perished and hanging on for dear life. At 116 years old though, it's quite amazing. At least, I think so! 🧯

I hate to think how many people were injured activating these due to the high pressure and resulting burns to skin and eyes! 👀

I don't think anything this great will find its way into my collection again! 🤩

Monika has recently completed a detailed fire risk assessment for Dirtbikexpress in Minehead 🔥📝

Following an initial site visit, she has spent the past week carefully reviewing the premises, identifying fire risks, considering existing controls, and formally constructing the assessment to provide a clear and practical report for the business.

A fire risk assessment is more than just a document — it is about understanding the risks and helping businesses keep their staff, customers and premises safe. It is also a statutory requirement for virtually all non-domestic premises to have one in place!

Annual fire extinguisher service carried out for Broadlands Retirement Living in Minehead 🧯

36 units and 1 fire blanket serviced, 6 x Water and CO2 units supplied and replaced, fire logbook updated, documentation sent and the next service reminder set! Compliant for another year ✅️

My annual visit to The Libra School near South Molton wouldn't be the same without being MASSIVELY held up by these guys!

Currently working through 600+ electrical appliances to ensure they are safe for use when the school reopens 🔌⚡️👌

As the Responsible Person (RP) e.g. owner, employer, building manager etc you are legally responsible for ensuring a fire risk assessment, and fire protection measures, are in place and regularly maintained! 📝🚨🔦🧯

The number of businesses I see with no FRA, faulty fire alarm panels, insufficient emergency lighting, poor signage, poorly installed and maintained fire fighting equipment (if any at all), is truly frightening!

In this case a fine of £33,700, loss of business and a damaged reputation is one thing. Had there been a fire which resulted in the loss of life and property the repercussions aren't worth thinking about.

There are no excuses for not knowing your legal obligations and in this case, it was not a defence.

Everything is fine, until it's not!

Prestleigh Inn B&B Limited was sentenced at Taunton Magistrates' Court on 16 July after admitting four offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The company was also ordered to pay a £2,000 victim surcharge and prosecution costs of £5,700.

Another fire extinguisher take over to end the week, this time at Merlins Indoor Market 🧯🔥

New 21A Water extinguishers supplied and installed throughout, alongside existing CO2 extinguishers for the electrical risks. The old Foam extinguishers were removed as there are no class B (flammable liquid) risks and therefore saving the customer a considerable amount of money! 💸

Several improvements made including the removal of multiple old signs, removing confusion in the event of use, and all neatly wall mounted with correct photoluminescent signage displayed! 👀
